Portland Trail Blazers Release Former Gonzaga Player
USA TODAY Sports

Malachi Smith is coming off a year where he played in 37 games for the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

The 23-year-old averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest while shooting 53.6% from the field and 50.0% from the three-point range.

This summer, Smith went undrafted, but he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers (he played two games in Summer League in Las Vegas).

However, he has now been waived, according to the NBA's official transaction page

Depending on the details of Smith's contract with the Trail Blazers, it's possible that he will play for their G League team this year.

Following the move, Keith Smith of Spotrac reported that the Trail Blazers have signed George Conditt.

Via Smith: "The Portland Trail Blazers have signed George Conditt, a league source told  @spotrac

Signing had been reported to be in the works a while ago and is now complete."

As for the Trail Blazers, they are coming off a year where they were the 13th seed in the Western Conference with a 33-49 record.

Despite a sensational year from All-Star point guard Damian Lillard, the team missed the NBA playoffs for the second straight season.

This offseason, the Trail Blazers traded Lillard in a blockbuster deal to the Milwaukee Bucks.

He had spent 11 seasons with the franchise and led them to the NBA playoffs eight times (and the Western Conference Finals in 2019).

The Trail Blazers are now in rebuilding mode and will likely miss the postseason for the third straight year.
