Dwight Buycks is an honest man. Most league MVPs would tell you how much better they got during a successful year but Buycks says his game didn’t really change in 2012-13 when he was named the top player in France after starring for BCM Gravelines. “I’m actually the same” said the 6-foot-3 Milwaukee native who is vying for minutes in the Raptors’ backcourt in his first NBA season. Buycks did acknowledge that he grew considerably as a man by being independent and on his own in Europe and got a lot out of the stint. “It definitely was a good year. They put a lot of trust in me with the basketball to lead them to win games and when you have that comfort from your teammates and your coaching staff it helps a lot” Buycks said after practice Tuesday. The former Marquette guard put himself on Toronto’s radar with his play in France and then an excellent summer league in Orlando and then Las Vegas. He was signed to a two-year deal. “For us it was a steal it was a good eye for his talent because he has speed and quickness you can’t teach” said Raptors head coach Dwane Casey of picking up Buycks. “He came from a tough program at Marquette where guys played hard played tough for Buzz Williams so he’s done a lot of good things from that standpoint.” Casey intoned that Buycks helped make up for the fact Toronto did not have a pick in either round of this summer’s draft. “I don’t know if there’s any guard in the late first or second round as good as him” said the coach. Casey isn’t yet sure how his point guard rotation will shake out behind Kyle Lowry — he likes D.J. Augustin and said Julyan Stone could play a role should he make the team — but intends to use Buycks to spark the offence on the second unit. Casey even agreed that Buycks might bring some of what Leandro Barbosa provided two seasons ago. “He can come in and change the game he has that type of Leandro speed. I don’t know if he shoots the ball as well as Leandro right now but he does have a three-point game in his repertoire and he’s a bit bigger more physically built. (Buycks has that Barbosa-like) type of speed that can break down opponents off of the dribble.” Buycks said his international experience will help him now that he is in the NBA because it was tougher to score inside overseas because opponents packed the paint and fewer fouls were called.
