Not once, but twice, Kyle Lowry dropped the athlete version of “It sucks and I don’t want to talk about it.” That would be, naturally, “It is what it is.” Lowry was discussing the damaged ligament on his left ring finger. He hurt it in the team’s final pre-season game, last Wednesday against Memphis, and he has to wear a protective splint over it during practices and games. The first trial came against Boston on Wednesday, with the next test coming Friday night in Atlanta. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to anything on my hand or my fingers,” Lowry said. “But I don’t got no choice right now.” “It’s a splint. I’m not going to make excuses or complain about it. I have five more weeks in it.” You get the sense that Lowry has a teardown calendar in his bedroom, counting down the days until he can ditch the splint one by one. It was perhaps a little too easy to blame Lowry’s poor shooting night — 2-for-8 from the floor, 7-for-12 from the free-throw line — in the Raptors’ opening-night win on his finger, and Lowry declined to do that, too. Beyond the shooting struggles, actually, Lowry played a pretty nice game. “I told him, ‘You may not have had a great shooting night, but everywhere else, you did a heck of a job,’ ” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “Clogging the paint, stopping the ball… He did a lot of good stuff defensively. Once he gets used to his little deal on his finger, that’s going to help him defensively.” He also moved the ball reasonably well. The Raptors are not going to be known for zipping the ball to one side and back, but Lowry managed eight assists against the Celtics. Oftentimes, he seemed the only Raptor capable of moving the ball at all.
