It looks like No. 1 NBA draft pick Anthony Davis will have the chance to add Olympic gold to his NCAA championship. Blake Griffin will have arthroscopic surgery next week to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee and will not play for the United States in the 2012 Olympics, according to a Los Angeles Times report. That opens up a roster spot for Davis, who was added to the roster Thursday and played for the US in its exhibition-opening, 113-59 rout of the Dominican Republic. Griffin went through a full practice Wednesday with Team USA in Las Vegas before reporting discomfort in the same knee that bothered him in the playoffs, USA Basketball said. He left the team Thursday to return to Los Angeles for evaluation. Griffin is expected to be out about eight weeks and is expected to be ready for Los Angeles Clippers training camp in October, the Times reported. It's the same knee Griffin sprained in the Western Conference first-round playoff series against the Grizzlies. Davis, the national player of the year for Kentucky, was a Team USA alternate after failing to make the 12-man roster. He had sprained his ankle in a workout with the New Orleans Hornets and wasn't able to scrimmage in the first two days of camp before the Americans picked their roster, robbing him of any chance to grab a spot. Davis' rebounding and shot-blocking will be a welcome addition on a US team that has the Knicks' Tyson Chandler as its only remaining center. Players can be replaced on the roster in case of injury any time up to 48 hours before the start of the Olympics. -- The Associated Press contributed to this report.
