According to Chris Vernon of ESPN Radio’s The Chris Vernon Show in Memphis, Grizzlies center Marc Gasol will be named the 2012-13 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
In 80 games played this season, Gasol has averaged 14.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals a game.
The Memphis Grizzlies led the league this season in allowing the fewest points per game at 89.3. They ranked 3rd in opponent field goal percentage and 2nd in opponent 3-point percentage, teams shot 43.5% against the Grizzlies this season and only 33.8% from 3-point territory.
Marc Gasol’s importance to his team’s defense goes way beyond the numbers in a typical box score. When he is in the game, the Grizzlies allowed 99.3 points per 100 possessions. That number climbed to 105.9 points when he was on the bench.
