Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder were at Salt Lake City’s EnergySolutions Arena on Tuesday for a tilt against the Utah Jazz. The outcome of the game did not work out in the Thunder’s favor, as the visitors lost by a score of 109-94, snapping the team’s four-game winning streak. And while Westbrook chipped in 22 points and 5 assists, he was a minus-13 on the night and had 7 turnovers, which isn’t as they say in the business, “great” (although most of team was a “minus” on the game and Westbrook’s line was far better than teammate Serge Ibaka’s minus-28). Still, perhaps a statistically pedestrian night (for him) may help explain Westbrook’s surly demeanor and churlish attitude in the locker room following the loss. When asked an inane question by a reporter, Westbrook couldn’t have appeared more irritated with having to answer such a useless inquiry. Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman was present and here is how he chronicled the exchange between Westbrook and the reporter who probably regrets even allowing the words from leaving his mouth: Westbrook simply walked off. The temperamental team captain got fed up with a reporter’s question and suddenly turned his back and ended the interview before walking away. The exchange was as follows. “Russell, did you guys lose this game, or did the Jazz win this one?” Westbrook: “Whaaaaat? Bro, what are you talking about, man? I’m out man. Y’all n***** trippin’.” Ouch. And the video: Man, if I were that reporter, I would have slunk out of that locker room feeling like a horse’s arse. But then again, I suppose it comes with the territory. Westbrook has become somewhat a notorious figure as it relates to his often tense and standoffish interactions with the media, but it’s hard to blame him for his reaction to such a useless, inane question. Although this guy’s inquiry probably elicited a less aggravated response to what I would have asked: “Hey Russell, tough loss, but more importantly, why aren’t you sporting those goofy glasses you are always wearing during postgame interviews? It’s not like the lenses needed replacing. What gives?” Yeah, Westbrook probably wouldn’t have appreciated that line of questioning, either.
