Playing out the string for the final two weeks of the regular season, the Philadelphia 76ers aren’t necessarily worried about wins and losses here. And while the brass in Philadelphia wouldn’t admit this publicly, losses are probably better for the team’s long-term viability.

It’s in this that Philadelphia has shut down second-year big man Jahlil Okafor for the remainder of the season.

“76ers’ Jahlil Okafor (knee) being shut down for season. Robert Covington has been diagnosed with torn right meniscus & his season is over,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on Friday.

Okafor has been dealing with right knee soreness that’s seen him miss each of the past four games. The 2015 first-round pick finishes his sophomore season averaging 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. There’s also a good chance that he has now played his final game in Philadelphia. Remember, there were widespread rumors that the Sixers were going to move him prior to the February trade deadline (more on that here).

The most interesting news here is Robert Covington’s injury. He’s played extremely well this season, averaging 12.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Though, Covington should be fully recovered when Philadelphia begins its off-season program.

The two join youngster Joel Embiid on the sideline for Philadelphia as the team closes out what has been an otherwise surprising performance this season.
