The San Antonio Spurs must have a lot of faith in Marcus Denmon since they drafted him onto a team that’s already saturated with guards. Denmon certainly is talented, but he’s not ready for the big leagues just yet. The Spurs sent him off to France to play for Elan Chalon. They’ll be keeping a close eye on the guard from Missouri as he grows and matures overseas.

Recently, the guys over at Spurs Brasil were able to get Denmon to answer some questions about playing in Europe, being drafted by the Spurs and developing his game.

Denmon isn’t the most talkative interviewee, but he did give some insight into what his Spurs experience has been like so far. He talked about playing as part of the summer league team in Las Vegas and how he picked up the system quickly.

From reading the interview, it looks like the Spurs want Denmon to play the point guard in the future. They’re asking him to develop his skills in running an offense and his point guard efficiency. He seems to think that his time spent in Europe will help him do just that.

Right now, as the 59th pick in the draft, Denmon doesn’t have too many expectations weighing on his shoulders. He can take the slow route and mature his game in France and hopefully in a couple years, he’ll be ready to log some minutes for the Spurs. Since the team obviously doesn’t need him to step in right now, there’s no danger in rushing him into action too soon. They’re so stacked at guard that it’s a wonder they even drafted another one to begin with, but I never doubt the Spurs’ ability to snag some solid talent that late in the draft. It may just be a few years before we see what Marcus Denmon is truly capable of.
