LAS VEGAS -- Summer League is for three things: Improving your game, competing for a roster spot or experimenting wit someone's game. For example, Cory Joseph is working on improving his game, particularly the floor leading aspect. Everyone not named Joseph, Aron Baynes and Nando De Colo are competing for a roster spot, be it with the Spurs or another team as there are coaches, general managers and scouts from all 30 teams here watching games. Meanwhile, Nando De Colo is experimenting with a new position, shooting guard.
We should say it's not completely new. De Colo often plays alongside Tony Parker on the French National Team. However, when it comes to the San Antonio Spurs, it's a new position. De Colo spent a considerable amount of time working off the ball. While he didn't shoot particularly well, De Colo showed an ability to get his shot off well if the space was there or use a screen to create for himself or others. Summer League coach Ime Udoka said the team thought De Colo looked good in the role despite his low shooting percentage.
"We really want to see him work off the ball. Also defensively he’s guarding bigger guys, two guards," Udoka said. "We want to see a little bit of that so it’s a benefit for him and we think he did a good job."
The Nando shooting guard experiment would give the Spurs another shot creator off the ball. Whether that will eventually create some playing time competition between he and Marco Bellinelli. If De Colo does develop an off the ball game, his skill set will start to look very similar to the newest Spurs guard.
BEST OF MAXIM
Deshaun Thomas had one of the most intriguing Summer League games for San Antonio Spurs players in recent memory.
He finished with 18 points on 7-13 shooting from the field in his first game. His ability to score the basketball is what jumped out across to many people who were watching Thomas for the first time. For those who were familiar with Thomas, this was no surprise...
With the San Antonio Spurs' Summer League team down 68-67 after a Charlotte three-pointer to take the lead, the Spurs had 12.3 seconds left to make something happen.
Enter guard Cory Joseph.
With plenty of time on the game-clock in the fourth quarter, Joseph took the ball down the court and with veteran-type poise, hit the game-winning shot for San Antonio. The Spurs...

LAS VEGAS -- Cory Joseph's career has been anything but consistent. He spent much of his first year and about half of his second year in the D-League playing for the Austin Toros. Midway through last season, he seemed to be in San Antonio for good and by the end of the season had wrestled back up point guard duties away from Nando De Colo.
He even consistent minutes...
LAS VEGAS -- After one so-so game and one bad game, Nando De Colo broke out, helping guide the San Antonio Spurs to a 96-87 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, Monday night. De Colo and Aron Baynes each had 19 points to lead a very balanced scoring attack which saw four Spurs in double figures.
De Colo came out aggressive as his eight first quarter points kept the Spurs from falling...

Before the San Antonio Spurs’ Summer League team departed for Las Vegas, Summer League coach Ime Udoka had this to say on Wednesday.
“I’ve got orders to see what certain guys can do at certain positions.”
“Obviously we’ve got some guys we want to take a look at,” continued Udoka Wednesday, “see them in different roles, in different aspects.”
It was perhaps one of San Antonio Spurs' Tony Parker's best seasons since joining the team. The 12-year pro averaged 20 points, 7.6 assists, 3 rebounds, and shot 52% from the field last season. It was enough for him to garner NBA MVP mentions before going down with an ankle injury during the regular season.
And though Parker and the Spurs came up short in the NBA Finals...
