AT&T Center - San Antonio Spurs' Tony Parker spent most of his offseason on the court instead of resting. Aside from a deep playoff run to the NBA Finals with San Antonio, he suited up for the French national team at EuroBasket 2013 where he captured the gold medal.
Add a quick turn around from Team France to join the Spurs for training camp and a slate of preseason games ahead of him, and one can imagine that rest is in order for the Spurs' floor general.
The Spurs got their preseason schedule going yesterday with a narrow win over CSKA Moscow. Parker logged 20 minutes of action and finished with six points.
After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich stated the team is making sure they are not overworking Parker in practice but he expects Parker to fight a little and want more playing time as the regular season draws near.
"Oh yeah, he's fine. We sat him a couple of practices so far just to make sure we're not overdoing it. But he's still young and he wants to be ready to go," said Popovich. "We'll probably fight a little bit about it as we get closer to the real season, but for now we'll play him for sure."
Despite the long summer of play, Parker does insist he is feeling good. However, it can be a double-edge sword.
On one hand, the team does not want to exhaust Parker so early in the season and risk injury which might stem from his long summer of play. On the other hand, the team has to give him minutes to keep him fresh.
Parker is the youngest of the "Big 3" but he is on the opposite side of 30-years old. He is in his prime but it is a matter of resting him now and not risk him sputtering when it matters most - the postseason.
In the end, Parker is a competitor and it should not come as a shock to hear Pop expect him to want to play more as the season nears. However, the long term benefits certainly outweigh the short-term for Parker and San Antonio.

It's not only a brand new season for the San Antonio Spurs, bit it's also a brand new set of those funny HEB commercials starring Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and now, Kawhi Leonard.
Today after practice, Ginobili sent out a photo where he and Parker look quite regal sporting fancy robes for the upcoming commercials.
It's HEB commercials time!...
On media day, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and guard Tony Parker talked about bringing Parker back slowly and not overworking him after playing a majority of the offseason for France at Eurobasket.
Playing an 82-game season followed by a late playoff run that ended in Game 7 of the NBA Finals and adding on a full Eurobasket tournament can take it's toll on a player...
The Spurs are definitely one of the most exciting and
talked-about teams heading into the regular season. Why wouldn’t they be after the offseason they
just had? First, Tim Duncan demanded a trade.
Then Manu Ginobili showed up with hair plugs disguising his famous bald
spot. After that, Gregg Popovich
announced his intentions to walk away from the NBA after this season...
After signing a training camp deal, it seems the Sam Young era in San Antonio is over.

San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan is a physical specimen.
At age 37, one would think he would be a shell of his former self but he is still one of the premier big men in the NBA and is still producing at a high level for San Antonio. Last season, he averaged 17 points and 9.9 rebounds and helped guide the Spurs to their fifth NBA Finals appearance.
But before his impressive...
The San Antonio Spurs' 2013-14 season is drawing near and fans are getting pumped to see the men in black and silver hit the court once again.
There are many storylines heading into the Spurs' new season such as how the team will respond after losing in the NBA Finals last season, will Tony Parker's long summer catch up with him, and can Tim Duncan duplicate his performance...
San Antonio Spurs forward Matt Bonner may have a rep as someone who is ahem parsimonious with his NBA millions – notoriously both eating Subway and riding the subway while a member of the Toronto Raptors years ago – but some would argue that Bonner is being more sensible than anything.
Case in point – after Bonner’s 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix recently bit the dust and with...
In case you don't remember what former San Antonio Spurs guard Derek Anderson said about the Spurs during his free agency in 2001, here's a reminder.
Yes, the same Derek Anderson that once publicly denounced Gregg Popovich and the Spurs for not quickly forking over the multi-millions he expected as a free agent is now singing the praises of Pop.
AT&T Center - San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich can barely handle Manu Ginobili, the eccentric backup shooting guard that habitually unfurls high-risk passes in traffic, and utilizes a step back to generate space for a very, very difficult shot. These, um, decisions don't always end so well.
He can only take so much. Enter Marco Belinelli, the 27-year-old...
In just his second season in the NBA, San Antonio Spurs' Kawhi Leonard had the unenviable task of defending the best player on the planet - Miami Heat's LeBron James in the 2013 NBA Finals.
We all know how much of a wrecking ball James can be on the offensive end but Leonard held his own using his long arms, lateral quickness and massive hands in the Finals.
Previously on TNLP, we featured a story about Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert getting buff after working out with San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan.
For those of you wondering if Tim charged Roy any sort of price to work out with him, it appears that Duncan didn’t charge Roy anything to do so according to New York Daily News Frank Isola:
Roy Hibbert went to Texas this summer...
The Spurs outlasted CSKA Moscow 95-93 Wednesday.
The Moscow team is lead by legendary head coach Ettore Messina, who spent one season as the Lakers assistant. That was the closes thing the NBA has ever seen to a foreign coach.
We see tons of foreign players in the association but why not coaches?
Popovich believes they can adapt just as their players have.
“A lot of guys could...
The Spurs have released free agent small forward Sam Young according to an NBA source. Young’s release was confirmed via statement on Thursday.
Young is a veteran of four NBA seasons the last with Indiana. He played just one exhibition game for the Spurs finishing with no points on 0-for-6 shooting in Wednesday’s overtime victory against CSKA Moscow.
