A ClutchPoints post on X regarding an aspect of Victor Wembanyama’s press conference where the San Antonio Spurs star received the Rookie of the Year trophy has caused quite a stir on the social media platform.

Included in the post is a video of Wemby explaining the scientific phenomenon known as dark matter. Only a portion of what the 7-foot-4 phenom known as the “Alien” said is included in the text of the post.

How he answered a related question has elicited all types of reactions on X.

“What is dark matter? I like these kinds of questions because they’re different,” Wembanyama started his response when asked about the subject he spoke with local students about at a San Antonio Education Center & Planetarium before receiving his trophy.

“Dark matter is a mass we can’t see, but we know is there because it has influence on gravitational pulls and the speed of gravitational orbits in every galaxy,” Wemby said as he educated most adults in the room. “It’s presence inside galaxies is five times higher than regular matter, so it’s a huge mystery. We can’t see it. We can’t observe it, but we can observe its influence. This is dark matter.”

To use Wemby’s phrase, this is what led to responses that range from technical to silly.

One of the 135 and counting comments to the ClutchPoints post came from long-time noted NBA journalist Peter Vecsey. The former NBA analyst on NBC and TNT and columnist for the New York Post, replied, “Pop is the father of Dark Matter.”

The X user with the handle Packrip Beverley simply said, “Alien Confirmed.”

Other answers actually weighed in on the actual science. One of the 159 and counting re-post quotes came from the X user Lorduval.

“It’s not proven to have mass

Matter of fact it’s not proven to be anything

All we know is that something is interacting with universe solely via gravitational forces

It’s unobservable and can’t be interacted with outside of the gravitational force

We are still in the fetal stage of understanding dark matter

But I love that he is aware and exposed to this frontier of science.”

Another person commented on what it says about the school system in the United States that the French-born Wembanyama can cite a science lesson that many American students – much less athletes – wouldn’t know.

“He…he didn’t go to school over here,” TopNorth_NoLess wrote with a smiley face emoji to end,

With those as just several of the reactions among the nearly two million impressions, who knew dark matter could lead down a dark hole on X.
