The San Antonio Spurs just announced they have waived forward Derrick Brown and center Eddy Curry.   The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived forward Derrick Brown and center Eddy Curry.   Brown was signed by the Spurs on Sept. 27.  He appeared in five preseason games, averaging 6.6 points and 1.0 assist in 15.4 minutes.   Curry joined the Spurs on Oct.1 and saw action in five preseason games, averaging 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.4 minutes. Previously it was reported that the battle for the 15th roster spot was between Brown and Curry, but now only Josh Powell and Wesley Witherspoon remain out of the camp hopefuls. Most Spurs fans expected Curry to make the roster considering the Spurs could use some size on the front line and he showed up to camp in great shape. Theres still an outside chance Witherspoon or Powell could make it with Powell looking like the frontrunner, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich could elect to not fill the 15th roster spot like he's done in previous seasons in a cost-cutting move. Witherspoon had one standout 17-point performance against Houston, but he is looking more like he could be an outstanding pickup for the Austin Toros over being a third small forward for the Spurs. Powell has averaged seven points and 4.2 rebounds in three preseason games and was given the most playing time he's seen against   Orlando. Curry will likely find a spot on a roster pretty quickly with reports earlier in camp that other teams were interested.
