The Brooklyn Nets have changed a few things during their migration from New Jersey. They’ve gotten some better players, a new place to play and a new look. The new look reportedly comes courtesy of some help from rapper Jay-Z.

But it wasn’t as simple as coming up with a new design, according to the New York Times, Jay-Z had to do a little lobbying as well.

“[Jay-Z] helped design the team logos and choose the team’s stark black-and-white color scheme, and personally appealed to National Basketball Association officials to drop their objections to it (the N.B.A., according to a person with knowledge of the discussion, thought that African-American athletes did not look good on TV in black, an assertion that a league spokesman adamantly denied).”

Well that’s interesting. Of course the NBA is going to deny being that superficial, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

So if they don’t like black uniforms, I wonder how they feel about the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have been wearing black and white for what feels like centuries (how old is Tim Duncan now?) and I’ve never heard the NBA object to it. Of course, the Spurs have been wearing their colors for longer than High Def TV has been around, maybe this NBA viewpoint is something new and it’s too late to change anything. It’s also not like the Spurs are the only team that wears black either. The Blazers and the Heat have black jerseys, and almost every team has at least one black version of the uniform that they wear on occasion.

Either way, it looks like Jay-Z got his Brooklyn uniforms without too much hassle, so maybe this is more of an opinion and less of a rule for the NBA. It’s a very shallow, close-minded way of thinking, but I guess they’re entitled to their own view as long as they don’t try to change anything.
