The New Orleans Hornets were victorious in their first of only two preseason games over the host Memphis Grizzlies.  Newly acquired Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, and Al-Farouq Amino were all absent from the game as they had just arrived in New Orleans shortly before.  So we got to see a total of five players that are under contract with New Orleans actually play in this game, the rest are players fighting for a spot on the roster.

Jarrett Jack, the new starting point guard now that Chris Paul is out of town led the charge for the Hornets with 24 points on 8 of 14 shooting and added 6 assists.  Emeka Okafor and Quincy Pondexter each chipped in 12 points a piece, Trevor Ariza dropped in 11, and Marco Belinelli put in 9 points.  That rounds out Hornets under contract with the team, others that stood out fighting for a spot were both the Johnsons.  Trey Johnson in just under 20 minutes of playing time put in 8 points, had 1 assist, and 1 steal.  Trey is one of the few members there that has seen time in the NBA, though not much he seems to be putting forth a solid effort in making his case to earn a contract.  The other Johnson, Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson looked pretty good in his twelve minutes on the court.  Carldell put in 10 points, the other starter at forward Lance Thomas logged in over 36 minutes and put in 7 points.  David Anderson dropped in 4 points to round out the scoring for New Orleans.  Others that played but did not score were:  Justin Dentmon, Terrico White, and Moses Ehambe.  The last three were waived today by the Hornets to cut down the roster from 19 down to 16 just 9 days before the regular season starts.  Those left on the roster with unguaranteed contracts are Trey Johnson, Brian Butch, Carldell Johnson, Jerome Dyson, DaJuan Summers, and Lance Thomas.  With New Orleans expected to sign a backup point guard via free agency that would mean at least two more will get cut before opening day.

Another minor rumor circulating around is that New Orleans is Mexican center Gustavo Ayon.  The 6′ 10″ center is rumored to be near signing a deal and the New Orleans Hornets are the front runners.  Seems the Hornets are seriously addressing the size issue this offseason that put them at a disadvantage against the Lakers last postseason.  The next preseason game is this Wednesday, when the Hornets will host the Memphis Grizzlies only this time we should get to see the new acquisitions of Gordon, Kaman, and Amino.
