OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City assistant coach Mo Cheeks has been named the head coach of the Detroit Pistons, replacing the fired Lawrence Frank. While the Thunder have not confirmed anything, forward Kevin Durant tweeted a congratulatory note to Cheeks saying, "He will be missed!" Cheeks just finished his fourth season as the top assistant with the Thunder and should be given credit for the development of guards Russell Westbrook, Eric Maynor and Reggie Jackson. Before coming to Oklahoma City, Cheeks was the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers for three seasons and seven seasons as the coach at Portland. Cheeks played 15 seasons in the NBA, the first 11 with the 76ers where he was part of the 1983 championship team. He played for four other teams and was selected to the NBA's All-Defensive Team four times and made the All-Star game four times.
