While the San Antonio Spurs are getting ready for the playoffs, and Spurs fans keeping a close eye on tonight's Suns-Jazz game, the Spurs' D-League team, Austin Toros, is just two wins away from their first ever D-League championship. The Toros kick off a three-game series with the Los Angeles D-Fenders tonight in Austin.
The Toros will have a tough road ahead of them. The D-Fenders have not lost a game in the postseason and posted the best record (38-12) in the regular season. The Toros had the second best regular season record (33-17) and will be led by the D-League MVP and former Spur, Justin Dentmon, as well as reassigned Spurs rookie Cory Joseph.
Joseph has averaged 11.3 points per game, 5.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in the playoffs for the Toros, pretty close to his season averages. He’s been putting in about 34 minutes a game and started all six playoff games so if the Toros are going to have a shot, Joseph will have to play well.
I know everyone’s excited for the NBA playoffs, but while the season winds down and some of the games don’t matter as much, it might be good to catch some competitive, championship basketball and support the Spurs’ D-League team. Also, how ironic is it that even Austin has to face Los Angeles for the title much like the Spurs had to in past playoffs versus the Lakers.
Game two of the series will be in Los Angeles on Thursday, and game three will be Saturday, also in L.A. (if necessary). You can watch the games on NBATV or streaming online.

A fan of the San Antonio Spurs since the 1970s, 104-year-old Theresa Sanchez attended her first game in person on Monday night.
SAN ANTONIO This should not have happened. The San Antonio Spurs should not be the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Not with a roster that is in full-on transition mode. Not with their best player taking quarters, halves, entire nights off not in that figurative "he's getting lazy" way either, but in that literal "he's sitting on the bench in his warmups...
The San Antonio Spurs have played so well in this lockout-shortened season that they even surprised themselves. Well, they surprised at least one member of the team. Matt Bonner said during a radio interview with a station in Toronto that he thinks this year’s team has done better than anyone would have thought.
“You know what? It was a lot of uncertainty,” said Bonner...

Well not according to ESPN's Rob Parker. As if owning...
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Tim Duncan scored 18 points and the San Antonio Spurs clinched the top playoff spot in the Western Conference and pushed their win streak to eight, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 124-89 on Monday night.
It's another No. 1 seed for the Spurs, who somehow made this sixth one in the Duncan era even more surprising than getting here last season. Two days...
The San Antonio Spurs have signed Bakersfield Jam guard/forward Derrick Byars.
The San Antonio Spurs 15th roster spot has been left open for quite some time, but they'll finally fill it with D-League swingman Derrick Byars, according to Ridiculous Upside's Scott Schroeder.
Byars, who was drafted out of Vanderbilt with the 42nd selection in the 2007 NBA Draft, spent this past season with the NBA D-League's Bakersfield Jam, where he averaged 15.2...
After securing the number one seed in the Western Conference for the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs just have two more games before they close out what has been one of their most successful seasons, tying the Miami Heat and the Chicago bulls for top record in the NBA.
For Spurs guard Tony Parker, it signals the start of the real season for the Spurs, and he said on his French...
The story sounds like one that you'd see in a movie. Going from a 5'11" power forward in Laredo to the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers by the age of 33 is almost stranger than fiction, but it's all too true.Blazers head coach Kaleb Canales, the first ever Mexican-American head coach in the NBA, made it there through hard work and perseverance. After...
Patty Mills scored 27 points and the depleted San Antonio Spurs beat Phoenix 110-106 on Wednesday night in a game overshadowed by the fact it could have been Steve Nash's last in a Suns uniform.
The crowd stood and chanted ''We want Nash'' with about 5 minutes to go, leading coach Alvin Gentry to put the 38-year-old point guard in the game for a few plays before...

After securing the top seed in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs are already turning their attention to avoiding another first-round playoff exit.
The Phoenix Suns aren't getting that chance for a second straight season.
The Spurs may opt to begin preparing for the postseason by resting a number of players - including Tim Duncan - while trying to sweep the season...
