As the NBA trade deadline draws near, everyone’s favorite player to develop scenarios for is Josh Smith.  On one level, that’s understandable.  He’s an exciting player.  He may jack up a jump shot or five that he shouldn’t, but he’s a good defender, an excellent passer, and a holy terror on the fast break.  What doesn’t add up, however, are the logical underpinnings of trading Smith.  Why should the Hawks do such a thing? Yes, it’s true that Smith is a free agent at the end of the season.  And it’s certainly possible that he leaves Atlanta at that time.  However, it’s not a given that that will happen.  There’s not an obvious contender that will be able to pay Smith the type of max money he seems to want, and if it’s money he wants, the Hawks have it to give to him.  Furthermore, the likely trade partners seem to have almost nothing to offer in return.
