Trae Young and Dejounte Murray clear air on Hawks rumors
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Much has been made about the dynamics of the Hawks locker room since Trae Young arrived in Atlanta.

Lloyd Pierce, Nate McMillan, Travis Schlenk, and John Collins have all either left on their own accord or were forced out. Most NBA pundits point to Young as the primary catalyst, and that notion has continued with Dejounte Murray.

There’s no denying the on-court fit is wonky. Two ball-dominant guards was always going to be an awkward fit, but the hope was that Quin Snyder could figure it out. The experiment didn’t work.

Now, it seems like a virtual guarantee that the Hawks will trade one or both of their All-Stars. Young will fetch more in return, but most expect it to be Murray as Atlanta builds around the better point guard.

What’s not debatable is the reason for the inevitable split. It has nothing to do with the dynamic between Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, which the pair cleared up on Young’s From The Point podcast.

The Hawks superstar gets a bad rap.

Many confuse Trae Young with an uncoachable diva who runs his counterparts out of town, and it couldn’t be further from the truth. Does he have maturing to do still? Sure; everyone does at 25-years-old.

Young wants to win more than anything, and he doesn’t care how he gets there or who helps him get there. That’s evident. Murray is cut from the same cloth, and regular people confuse competitive drive with something else entirely.

The Hawks duo hasn’t worked out to this point, but it has nothing to do with their relationship. Both are more than capable of playing winning basketball. It just doesn’t seem like it will be possible together.
