As the National Basketball Association approaches the regular season good news comes about one of the former UNC Basketball players. It seems, according to HoopsWorld, that the Denver Nuggets and their starting point guard Ty Lawson (@TyLawson3 on twitter) are close to an extension. For the fourth year pro floor general, who was the 18th overall pick by the Minnesota Timber Wolves in the 2009 draft, could be close to a four year contract with the franchise from the Mile High city.

Lawson, who did not play last night and according to Rotowire.com it was due to an elbow injury, believes that the extension should be done soon, as he commented…
“I’m still confident,” Lawson said to HOOPSWORLD. “My agent is working with Masai Ujiri and Josh Kroenke so I feel like in the next couple of weeks something will get done. We’ll see.”
From sources close to the situation the deal should be close to $ 44 million in four years, an awesome upgrade from the $ 1,654,000 that the former National Champion is making now. And while many might believe this is a bit much for the 5’11″ speedster, but the reality is that next off season will not have many high caliber point guards on the market, and someone like Lawson could easily get an offer for $ 12 to 13 million per year. As far as the other former Tar Heel on the squad, head coach George Karl, who stays out of the business side of things, the main concern is to have all outside distractions over and done before the season begins.
Let me be the first to wish all the best to Lawson as he begins his fourth season in the NBA and hope that he has this contract signed, sealed and delivered before he and the Nuggets play their first regular season. Remember to check out how Lawson and all the other former UNC basketball at the next level are doing in my daily editions of Heels in the Pro’s NBA Style.
