Tyrese Maxey has impossible sequence including logo three-pointer to force overtime vs. New York Knicks
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

With a gentlemen’s sweep in their sights, the New York Knicks were 28 seconds away from a second-round appearance in the NBA playoffs. Then, Tyrese Maxey entered the chat.

With his Philadelphia 76ers down 96-90, Maxey pulled up and nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game. As if that wasn’t enough, he got fouled and converted the four-point play to make it a two-point deficit. After Josh Hart went 1-for-2 from the free throw line, Maxey again rose to the occasion to nail a logo three-pointer to force overtime – stunning the Madison Square Garden faithful.

It seemed like an impossible sequence, but Maxey showed off his magic skills in The Mecca.

Maxey then added five points in overtime to help propel the 76ers to the come-from-behind victory and force a Game 6 in the first round, sending the series back to Philadelphia. On the whole, he finished the night with 46 points to go with nine assists.

It was yet another impressive performance from the former Kentucky star, who also narrowly beat out Coby White of the Chicago Bulls for Most Improved Player during the regular season. He also had 35 points in a Game 2 loss to New York, although head coach Nick Nurse said there was an opportunity for him to maybe take things up a level.

“There were stretches of the game where I didn’t see him being so aggressive,” Nurse said, via ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. “But certainly like the last 15 minutes, he was really chasing it down and turning on the jets – all the things he can do just time and time again. So, I thought he was great when it really mattered.”

Tyrese Maxey’s latest performance not only helped get a victory, but it also avoided elimination.

Maxey put together a career year to help Philadelphia make the playoffs after starting out in the Play-In Tournament. He averaged a career-high 25.9 points during the regular season while shooting 45% from the field and 37.3% from three-point territory.

His emergence is coming at the perfect time for Philadelphia considering Joel Embiid’s health. He’s been dealing with a knee injury for most of the year, but also is fighting through Bell’s Palsy. That diagnosis came out after the 76ers’ Game 4 loss to the Knicks, but Embiid remained on the floor and had 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in the victory Tuesday night.
