The United States, recognised as the most successful Olympic Basketball champions of all-time, will defend their Beijing crown with a weakened squad, but could still be the team to beat at London 2012, according to the bookies on Betfair.com.

The lucky 12 that will compete has recently been announced, but there was no place for Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay, or Anthony Davis of New Orleans, who failed to make the final selection training session with a sprained ankle.

Coach, Mike Krzyzewski, has also had to contend with injuries that ruled out such NBA stars as center Dwight Howard, guards, Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade, and forward, Chris Bosh.

However, such is the strength in depth of the USA basketball game that the 12 who were eventually selected are all top-class players.

LeBron James, who this season gained his first NBA title with Miami, is joined by 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning teammates, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams, while Blake Griffin, Andre Iguodala, and James Harden also made the plane to London.

NBA top scorer, Kevin Durant, and Oklahoma City teammate, Russell Westbrook, who lost to Miami in the NBA Finals, will be joined by 2010 world championship teammates, Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love,

The squad is currently at a training camp in Las Vegas, and, after playing the Dominican Republic, will move on to Washington for three days, before playing Brazil. The plan then is to fly into Manchester for two more days training, before taking on the British Olympic squad.

The USA squad will complete its Olympic preparation with an exhibition game on 22nd July against Argentina, who knocked them out at the semi-final stage at Athens 2004, before testing its credentials against the team expected to give them most to do at the Olympics, Spain, on 24th July.

The Olympics 2012 athletics odds page is also worth a look, for anybody thinking of betting on the Games, this summer.
