Victor Wembanyama Turned Down An Opportunity To Join Drake Onstage: 'Can My Teammates Come With Me?'

It's not every day that you get the chance to join one of the world's biggest artists onstage at his show. But for Victor Wembanyama, not even the pull of Drake could get him to leave his teammates behind.

“There was a Drake concert in Austin and he got asked to come up on stage cause Drake was doing that with a bunch of NBA guys this offseason. Wemby was like ‘Can my teammates come up on stage with me? Cause they're gonna be at the concert with me.’ And Drake’s camp was like no. And he’s like, ‘Then I don’t want to do it.’ What 19-year-old kid doesn't want to go on stage with Drake?"

With millions of fans worldwide and a legacy as one of the greatest music artists of the modern generation, Drake isn't someone who is turned down easily. Victor Wembanyama still made sure to show up at the game, but the fact that he refused to go on stage for the sake of not excluding his teammates says a lot about this character.

Unlike most athletes at his age, Victor isn't about the glamour lifestyle and he believes in loyalty and humility over indulging himself in the guilty pleasures of life. So when it was time to choose between joining Drake on stage or staying with his teammates for the whole event, it was an easy choice for the young superstar and it's become the latest evidence of his approach to the game.

In just 71 games so far, Victor has shown to be the ultimate winner and his attitude is putting pressure on the entire Spurs organization to get the wheels spinning on building him a title-contending team. For now, after finishing 14th in the West, the Spurs still have a long way to go and Victor is only just starting to plant the seeds of his takeover.

Victor Wembanyama Is On The GOAT Trajectory

Victor came into the league with enormous expectations and he somehow managed to surpass them all. With averages of 21.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game, Wemby was the runaway candidate for Rookie of the Year and he was on the verge of cracking the All-Star reserves in the West.

For the Spurs, Victor was their only form of offense all season and he tried in vain to get them out of the Western Conference bunker. If not for him, San Antonio would be completely lost with no vision or direction for the future.

So while Wembanyama's performance did not translate into wins this season, his campaign was among the most impressive by any rookie -- including Michael Jordan and LeBron James. What makes it even better for Wemby is that he's passed every test as a leader this season, such as putting his teammates first and prioritizing winning over everything.

At just 20 years old, the young big man still has a long way to go before he can join the ranks of the top NBA legends but he's off to a terrific start so far and there's no reason to think he will be slowing down anytime soon.
