PLAYERS: Josh Smith
TEAMS: Detroit Pistons

Tweet The Detroit Pistons got something in their final game of the preseason that we haven’t seen much of over the years; Josh Smith nailing a long jump shot. Not only did he nail a jumper, Smith sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Pistons a 99-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves: In fitting style, Smith needed a little help from the rim but he made the shot nonetheless. Smith is a notoriously poor outside shooter and has hit only .283 of his career three point attempts, so hopefully Detroit isn’t planning on letting him jack up jumpers with regularity over the regular season. Still, Detroit can take some positives from their prized off-season acquisition’s performance to close out the preseason. -ALR

Video: Tom Gores Storms the Court After Josh Smith’s Preseason Buzzer Beater

This hopefully will not be one of the high points of Tom Gores’ reign as owner of the Detroit Pistons. But Gores decided to join in the celebration after Josh Smith’s last-second three-pointer handed the Pistons a preseason win over the Timberwolves. Smith’s shot hit front iron, then flipped into the net as the clock hit zero, erasing a 98-96 deficit. As the Pistons’ benched...

WATCH: Josh Smith nails game-winner from deep

Hoisting up shots from long range is typically something I cringe to see Josh Smith settling for. His size an athleticism make him the perfect weapon while driving into the lane. But, at times, Smith has a bad habit of settling for shots from beyond the arc , where he boasts a less-than-impressive 28% for his career. On Thursday night in Detroit, Smith saved the day with his 3-point...

J.J. Barea's layup with 3.6 seconds left gave the Timberwolves (4-3) a 98-96 lead but Smith, who got the ball out of a timeout, launched his shot...

Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores Goes Crazy After Preseason Buzzer Beater

Pistons’ Brandon Jennings expected to miss first four games

Detroit Pistons’ guard Brandon Jennings engaged in a light workout on Wednesday wearing a mask to protect his injured jaw.  There is no way he can play with basketball that way or even train properly, so his return is still a way away. Kurt Helin of NBCSports.com reported that David Mayo of MLive.com says that Jennings will miss the first four games of the regular season. “The...

Big men paying big dividends so far for Pistons

It’s far too early to call the Pistons’ big frontline a success, but the team leaves the preseason feeling optimistic about having Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe and Josh Smith on the floor together. While much was made of substitution patterns to get one of the three out early in quarters, Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks usually went deep into the first and third quarters before...

Chauncey Billups can take games off; Brandon Jennings works in mask

A day after Chauncey Billups played his longest stint in 20 months Detroit Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said the veteran guard would have some control over monitoring his minutes when the regular season begins next week. Billups has chosen to play in only two of seven preseason games. Cheeks said Billups will have the same option to sit out games during particularly challenging...

Injuries keep Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks from setting his starting backcourt

In an ideal world Maurice Cheeks would probably have already revealed his starting backcourt for opening night. But circumstances are far from ideal with injuries to Brandon Jennings (jaw/wisdom tooth) and Rodney Stuckey (broken right hand). So Cheeks isn’t ready to proclaim who will start alongside Andre Drummond Greg Monroe and Josh Smith when the team begins the regular season...

Peyton Siva & Gorgui Dieng Will Play Against Each-Other Tonight

It was just six and a half months ago that former Cards Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng were cutting down the nets in the Georgia Dome after guiding the University of Louisville to their first national championship in 27-years. Tonight, they’ll both be on the court together; however for the first time in three years, they won’t be teammates.  Siva’s new team, the Detroit Pistons...

With the Detroit Pistons win at home over the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team’s preseason has finally come to a close. The team finished with an even 4-4 record, but still had quite a few positives to take away. Improvements in Motor City Give Detroit Pistons Shot at Playoffs

It’s been a few years since basketball fans in the city of Detroit had something to be excited about going into a season. Not since the 2007-2008 season – when the Pistons’ core lineup of Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace – made their last stand making the Eastern Conference Finals – an eventual 6 game loss to the Boston...
