Warriors owner Joe Lacob comments on potential Kevin Durant trade

“I’m not gonna comment specifically on any player,” he replied.

“You know what this answer is going to be, which is we will always look at any opportunities to make ourselves better. The question you have to ask is, better near term, better intermediate term or better long term?

“Some options to building the team, if we were to pivot in some way, some partial way, might give us an even higher upside near term, but might decrease the long term. So these are the things that Bob [Myers] and the group, we all have to look at and determine what’s the right path.”

Lacob’s refusal to specifically address Durant is unsurprising. That said, his criteria for making a decision is telling. It seems like, unlike say the Los Angeles Lakers, the Warriors are unwilling to push all their chips to the center of the table and win now at the expense of later.

The front office clearly believes it can manage a mini-rebuild while still maximizing the skills of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson at the peaks of their careers. Time will tell if that calculation ultimately proves to be correct.

It will be interesting to see how this Durant situation unfolds.
