CHICAGO - JULY 31: Fomer NBA Star Magic Johnson backstage the National Urban League Conference at McCormick Place on July 31, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images for National Urban League)

You knew this was going to happen when it came out that Stuart Scott would no longer be part of ESPN’s NBA in-studio team, thus effectively leaving the network with four guys — Magic Johnson, Chris Broussard, Michael Wilbon and Jon Barry — who have zero anchoring experience to handle highlights packages.

So here is Magic Johnson last night doing his best to take us through the Lakers’ OT win over the Jazz. It was very amusing for all the wrong reasons. Somewhere in between Magic’s butchering of the score, names and English vernacular, I was just waiting to hear “boom goes the dynamite,” but that would have been too perfect.

It was just a bad night in general for ESPN’s NBA studio crew, a night that also had Broussard misspelling “Memphis.”

We’re not even three weeks into the season, but this isn’t doing anything to narrow the gap between TNT’s NBA coverage and ESPN’s. There’s still time to grow, but right now this experiment makes the Hannah Storm-Tom Tolbert-Peter Vecsey NBC studio crew from back in the day look like a Mensa meeting.
