Rip City’s LA Name: LaMarcus Aldridge Position: Power Forward Last Week’s Stats: 21.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.0 BPG We gave it to him last week; we’ll give it to him once again following the second week of the 2013-14 NBA season. LaMarcus Aldridge earns a spot in our weekly player spotlight for his performance in Week 2. The Portland Trail Blazers went 2-1 against the Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings, and LaMarcus Aldridge was the biggest reason why. His shot wasn’t always falling, but he got it done when it counted, which is what you would expect out of a two-time All-Star. LaMarcus Aldridge took DeMarcus Cousins to school during Week 2. Early in the week, the big man was having trouble with his shot. He had been extremely reliable through the team’s first three games, but his jumper began to fade, which is a problem when he’s taking so many shots in the mid range. Luckily for Portland, a slight dfrought only lasted through about five total quarters, which helped him get back on track in time for the lowly Sacramento Kings. At this point in the year, Aldridge has shown that he is the No. 1 option down the stretch. Damian Lillard proved last year that he can be counted upon with the game on the line, but the big man in the post continues to be a strong option, regardless of who is defending him, whether it be Dwight Howard or DeMarcus Cousins from last week. Just as importantly, Aldridge improved on the glass during the last three contests. He only managed to take five away from Howard and the Rockets, but his 14 against the Kings showed just what he can do when he puts his mind and his body to it. Simply put, Aldridge is the best player on this team, and regardless of what his long-term situation looks like, he’s the best option on this Trail Blazers roster. For those of you who are already bored with Aldridge earning this honor two weeks in a row, don’t you worry. There are plenty of players on this roster worthy of consideration, and we’re bound to see someone step up sooner rather than later. Damian Lillard has shot extremely well to start the year, and he’s shown that he can do more than just score the basketball. Wesley Matthews has also been a knock-down shooter, and in the process, he’s become the clear-cut No. 3 scorer on this ever-improving roster. Even Nicolas Batum has been fun to watch, as he’s proving he can do a little bit of everything, even when he’s not scoring on a regular basis. Portland has plenty of playmakers who will impact a run toward the playoffs, but until someone steps up, it’s the big man at the 4 who grabs top mentions.
