Kyrie on top of Grantland’s Rookie Rankings again- “Irving has been an effective pick-and-roll scorer all season. One of his weaknesses, however, has been finding open teammates when he uses ball screens, especially finding them as the third option on pick-and-roll plays (options one and two are Irving uses the screen to create a shot and Irving uses the screen before dishing to the roll man). According to Synergy Sports, Irving’s teammates shoot 41.4 percent when spotting up during Irving’s pick-and-rolls. They post 1.101 points per possession (PPP) in these situations, which puts Irving in the 77th percentile among all NBA players in terms of kicking the ball out after a ball screen. Irving needs to play with more patience and learn to read when defenses collapse on him.” [Pruiti/Grantland]

I still fear the day Nike introduces new uniforms in the NFL.  (April 3rd)- “Well, Tim Tebow’s name is everywhere else in New York … why shouldn’t it be in Nike Inc v. Reebok International, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York No. 12-2275? That’s the official name of the complaint filed by sportswear giant Nike against sportswear giant Reebok. Nike, who becomes the official manufacturer of NFL merchandise and player apparel on April 1, claims that Reebok, whose similar deal with the NFL expired before March 1, manufactured replica jerseys with Tebow’s name and number in a misappropriation of Nike’s rights. The lawsuit, dated March 27 and made public on Wednesday, claims that Reebok “has no authorization from Mr. Tebow or anyone else to use Mr. Tebow’s name or other identification on such Jets product.” [Farrar/Shutdown Corner]

“They aren’t trying to lose specifically, they’re just totally gassed at just the right time. Playoffs well out of reach, nothing more to prove. They’ve hit the rookie wall, whole team wall, whatever wall you want to say, they just look collectively done out there. This after playing both hard and well for the first half of the season, and maybe a little more than that. They were always willing to make that late push on a nightly basis, they beat some teams like the Mavericks and Celtics they had no business beating, and did some overachieiving to be sure. If Anderson Varejao doesn’t get hurt, the Cavaliers are probably in the playoffs as the 8th seed, or at least in the race right now. But that doesn’t matter.

What matters this season is that the Cavaliers proved Kyrie Irving is a superstar-type player. They proved the Tristan Thompson pick was correct, and they proved they’re moving in the right direction under Byron Scott. Chris Grant also added a first round pick without dealing Varejao, and the future looks really bright around here. So I’m saying I think they’ll lose tonight to the Pistons, probably lose on Friday to the Bucks as well, and it might be ugly for the next few weeks. But on April 26th, less than one month away, the season is over, and a whole new day begins.” [Bowers/Stepien Rules]

Sigh. The third most critical at-bat of all time- “The third, and overlooked: You may remember the seventh game of the 1997 Series as a crazy 11-inning affair capped by Edgar Renteria’s two-out RBI single with the bases loaded for a Marlins victory. That was a mighty critical at-bat, but there was an earlier, more critical at-bat. In the bottom of the ninth, the Indians were still leading the game by a run with closer Jose Mesa on the mound and Craig Counsell at bat. Runners were on first and third; one out. Counsell hit a hard sacrifice fly (really, it was more of a line drive than fly ball) to deep right, tying the score and setting the stage for Renteria’s slightly less critical moment (yet more memorable hit) in the 11th.” [Studeman/Hardball Times]
