Found September 20, 2013 on NY Sports 24/7:
The New York Knicks are apparently considering signing big man Earl Barron. What are the Knicks waiting for? When Barron, 32, played for the Knicks in 2009-10, he averaged nearly 12 points and 11 rebounds in 33 minutes. He played only one regular season game for the Knicks last season, in which he scored 11 points and pulled down 18 rebounds against the Atlanta Hawks. The Kicks would benefit from Barron’s rebounding ability and size. Besides Tyson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire, the Knicks have no one on the roster on whom they can rely for rebounding. And although the Knicks already signed Jeremy Tyler to a two-year, non-guaranteed contract as a backup center to Chandler, Tyler’s expected to return in eight weeks as he recovers from a fractured foot. Till then, who would play center when Chandler’s on the bench. Andrea Bargnani? He averaged only about three rebounds per game last season. The Knicks need more rebounds than that from their center. Barron deserves at least a non-guaranteed contract so he can prove his worth at Knicks training camp. Based on Barron’s stats from his 2009-10 Season with the Knicks, he may have played even better than Chandler. Barron averaged more points, rebounds and assists per game than Chandler in fewer minutes. The Knicks coaching staff wants to sign Barron now but Knicks management wants to wait, according to Bleacher Report. Management may be concerned with Barron’s lack of play in the NBA. Since his season with the Knicks in 20019-10, during which Barron appeared in only seven games, Barron played an average of only six games. He’s also played for six different franchises during that period. Although Barron has yet to contribute a whole season of play for an NBA team, if the Knicks coaching staff thinks Barron deserves a shot, management should trust them. What harm could there be in offering Barron a non-guaranteed contract? If the Knicks are serious about contending for an NBA Championship this year, they need to take some risks. They can start by signing Barron.     Lucas Rubio is a columnist for and author of the Playerz League Sports Blog. Follow him on Twitter @PlayerzLeague.
