MINNEAPOLIS Andrei Kirilenko will miss his second consecutive game Friday with the strained right quadriceps he suffered during Monday's loss. The announcement comes as no surprise, as it seemed unlikely Kirilenko would take the court before the team's back-to-back road trip in Memphis and Cleveland that begins Sunday. In other injury news, Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said Friday that he's been pleased with Chase Budinger's recovery thus far and that the swingman is expected to be cleared to run the court by the end of next week. He still needs to strengthen his quadriceps before that happens, though, Kahn added. In terms of a return date, Kahn was vague, saying that he expects him back in March, though certainly not early in the month."As always is the case when people are in these significant rehab periods, there could always, God forbid, be a setback," Kahn said. "He hasn't had one yet. Our rehabs have been, we have a lot of injuries, but we have good rehabs. He hasn't had a setback."Kahn also said that shooting guard Brandon Roy hopes to begin some basketball-related one-on-one workouts soon, but that "if it happens, it happens, and we're not planning on it."All-Star weekend addition: Ricky Rubio was a surprise late addition to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge game on Thursday night, when TNT's Kenny Smith expanded the rosters from 18 to 20 players to include Rubio and Sacramento's Isaiah Thomas. Rubio did not learn that he'd been selected until that night, and he joked that he was going to give Smith "a big present" for adding him to the game.Rubio also said he doesn't think playing in the game will cut too much into his rest during the All-Star break. The game is Friday, and he'll leave Houston on Saturday morning. The Timberwolves then do not play until the next Wednesday.Kahn said that he was surprised Rubio wasn't picked in the initial go-round and that he was pleased by the late selection."I felt very strongly that even though he missed significant time this year, that he deserved to make it to begin with, meaning he had already demonstrated last year what kind of impact he will have on this league, much less our team," Kahn said. "I was disappointed in the first go-round that he wasn't there. There's very few players who can spice up a game of that type like he can."Alexey Shved will also compete in the Rising Stars game, and both he and Rubio are on Charles Barkley's team, Team Chuck. Rubio added to BBVA Rising Stars game

MINNEAPOLIS When the 18-man roster for the BBVA Rising Stars game, a part of NBA All-Star weekend, was announced last week, there was at least one noteable omission. NBA rookie wall is real but not easily defined

MINNEAPOLIS Derrick Williams saw it on tape. After last season, when he sat down and played back those games starting in February, around the All-Star Break, it was there. He'll admit to such now, a year out, now that the whole thing is behind him. It, in this instance, is the rookie wall, the vague notion that seems to be on the tip of everyone's tongues this time of year...

Rubio: The Story of Ricky

Although he has revved up as an assists machine again, Ricky Rubio has been absolutely brutal with the FG%, and not in the good way. Last night, he shot for 9 points on 3 of 13 and added 4 rebounds, 11 assists, and 3 steals. He is barely shooting above 30% for the year. He shot a little better last season, but still less than 36%. Last night marked the first time he took more than...

Timberwolves drop another airtight contest

MINNEAPOLIS There's this music that plays at the Target Center coming out of breaks when games are close late. It's got this "leading up to a great cage match," Rocky-esque vibe, high drama and such, the sort of thing that's supposed to inspire confidence and make the veins in players' temples bulge. On Friday, though, it was the Timberwolves' death...
