MINNEAPOLIS When the Timberwolves tip off against the Pacers at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Fargo, N.D., they'll look radically different than the team that took the court last season. Sure, three of Wednesday's five starters Kevin Love, J.J. Barea and Nikola Pekovic started for the team at times last season, but only one other player competing Wednesday, Derrick Williams, was with the Timberwolves last year. That's in part because Ricky Rubio (obviously), Luke Ridnour and Malcolm Lee are sitting with injuries. None of the three made the trip. Other than those three, which push the total number of returning Timberwolves to seven, the rest of the players taking the court on Wednesday will be making their debuts with the team.Thirteen players (including six training camp invitees) who could earn minutes on Wednesday were not with the team in 2011-12. That includes two starters Andrei Kirilenko and Brandon Roy as well as players like Chase Budinger, Alexey Shved, Lou Amundson, ...

Timberwolves intrigued by rookie Shved

MINNEAPOLIS With Alexey Shved, listening is an effort. You're trying so hard to hear him that you forget what he's saying, willing so hard for it to be louder and slower that the words cease to make sense. It's not that Shved doesn't speak English. He does, and pretty well for a player who was born 5,000 miles from Minneapolis and lived in Russia until last month...

Adelman impressed with Williams' progress

Derrick Williams’ first year in the NBA was marked with inconsistency. The rookie out of Arizona appeared in every game last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but if you made a graph of the minutes he played, it would look like a mountain range. Williams had some brilliant performances, including a 27-point game against the Clippers where he shot 9 for 10 from the field...

Love starts new contract with new goal: playoffs

The London Olympics weren't all fun and games for Kevin Love. Sure, the Minnesota Timberwolves star got to see the sights, play a crucial role on the best team in the world and bring home a gold medal. But in between games, he took plenty of grief from his hyper competitive U.S. teammates. Love was the only NBA player on the roster without a playoff appearance, and he heard...

Ricky Rubio signs endorsement deal with Adidas

And the children, danced...Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio has entered into a long-term partnership deal with Adidas, according to the company's website. Rubio, who was drafted 5th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, finished second in the NBA's rookie of the year voting last year (Rubio continued to play in Spain even after being drafted until the 2011-2012 season)...

Make no mistake, chemistry makes a difference

MINNEAPOLIS In the week and a half since Timberwolves media day, approximately 20,000 words about the team's chemistry and the difference it will make have been beamed across the Internet and plastered throughout newspapers. That's a lot of words about something that's the most vague and intangible element of basketball, and yet we continue to wonder and ask and write...
