The 49ers manhandled the Jets on Sunday in a 34-0 victory. Yet the team had quite a few first time occasions on each side of the ball to propel them to the big win.

The biggest note for firsts in this game is quarterback Colin Kaepernick's first career touchdown. The second year backup scored his first touchdown in the second quarter of the game on a read option run. This was the second designed run for Kaepernick of the game, but he also had the opportunity for his first passing touchdown in the game. In the first quarter, Kaepernick threw a deep pass to Randy Moss in the endzone, but was incomplete with three defenders covering the wide receiver.

Kaepernick also had an opportunity to score another rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter, as he broke free on a run but wisely chose to slide before the end zone with the game well in hand. A move like that showed maturity for the young quarterback, as the 49ers were then able to kneel the ball twice and end the game.

"That’s one less kickoff we have to cover," said Kaepernick. "That’s one less time we have to go out on defense. We can end the game with no more collisions or chance of injury.”

Another first in the game was cornerback Carlos Rogers' first fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. The play occurred in the beginning of the fourth quarter, when Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez completed a pass to wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Holmes made an attempt to turn up the field but immediately fell to the floor with an injury. Holmes was never ruled down before releasing the ball, and Rogers picked up the ball to run it back for a touchdown with several teammates serving as his blockers. The fumble recovery was Rogers' second of the day and third on the season. Rogers now has three career touchdowns as his first two came from interception returns.

Also in the fourth quarter, linebacker Larry Grant blocked the first punt of his NFL career. Grant was able to block a punt with under eight minutes left in the game despite the fact he was the lone player rushing in for the block. The play not only marked Grant's first punt block but also the team's first blocked punt of the season. The 49ers then capitalized on the excellent field position to put the game at 34-0.
