49ers announce roster moves ahead of Sunday's game in Arizona
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have announced two roster moves ahead of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers have promoted DL T.Y. McGill and RB Jeremy McNichols to the active roster from the team's practice squad. Both are standard elevations, meaning they will revert to the practice squad after the game in Arizona.

McGill, who will wear number 96 on Sunday, will be needed as the 49ers are short on defensive linemen. Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave have already been declared out. Missing two key starters will be a challenge for the 49ers, who will be facing a Cardinals team that runs the ball very well. Javon Kinlaw, Kevin Givens, and Kalia Davis are the other defensive tackles who will see playing time on Sunday.

McGill was released by the 49ers in August but then signed to the practice squad the very next day. Today's promotion to the active roster is McGill's first of the season. The defensive tackle appeared in nine games with the 49ers in 2022. He will be needed on Sunday to help slow down James Conner and the Arizona running game.

McNichols has bounced on and off the 49ers practice squad this season. The running back was promoted last week, due to the injury to backup running back Elijah Mitchell. With Mitchell already being declared out for Sunday's game, the 49ers need another running back on the gameday roster. For the second week in a row, McNichols was promoted instead of former third-round pick Ty Davis-Price. McNichols will likely play on special teams only.

Earlier this week, San Francisco signed veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to the practice squad. Verrett was with the 49ers from 2019-2021. In 2021, Verrett suffered a knee injury in the opening game and was lost for the rest of the season. McNichols wore Verrett's old number 22 last week, but with Verrett joining the team, McNichols graciously gave the cornerback his old number back. McNichols will wear number 36 on Sunday.
