Matt Barrows of Sacramento Bee writes that the 49ers could consider fielding trade offers for one of their nose tackles – Glenn Dorsey or Ian Williams. Barrows points out that the 49ers only employ a nose tackle on around 40 percent of their defensive plays, but Dorsey and Williams are both starting-caliber players. On top of that, Barrows mentions that Quinton Dial has actually played nose tackle before and could get some time at the position this summer. San Francisco’s roster is so deep that they have wound up red-shirting rookies in previous years and it appears as though they could end up doing the same thing again this year. Assuming the 49ers would be interested in moving of them for future draft picks, Barrows believes Williams is the more likely player of the two to be placed on the trading block. Williams, 24, was placed on season-ending injured reserve last September after he unfortunately broke his ankle. He still has three years remaining on his rookie contract with reasonable base salaries, so there could actually be some interest in him if the 49ers elect to go this route. Dorsey, 28, signed a two-year contract worth $6 million last season, so he’ll be entering the final year of his contract. He appeared in all 16 games last season and totaled 41 tackles and two sacks.
