By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer San Francisco's defense has a little inside game of its own going on in practice each week: ''Takeaway Thursday.'' Force as many turnovers as possible to prepare for more of the same come Sunday. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman claims his unit had nine turnovers during one such session recently - though quarterback Alex Smith begs to differ, calling that number inflated. The total hardly matters, it's the principle. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh isn't keeping track, though he loves the intense competition by his players leading up to games - and he's certainly thrilled that his defense delivered with an interception and forced the New York Jets into three lost fumbles in Sunday's 34-0 win at the Meadowlands. The dominant performance kept the Jets out of the red zone all day.

Colin Kaepernick era underway for 49ers?

Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers unleashed a new offensive wrinkle on Sunday. After losing their first game of the season in Week 3 to the Minnesota Vikings, it appears that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman have decided that it’s time to inject some life into their Alex Smith paced attack. In a surprise move the 49ers out-Tebowed the New York Jets in the...

Randy Moss is clearly just along for the ride in San Francisco

Through the first four weeks of the NFL regular season, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss has failed to live up to once again live up to the hype. This happened when he was waived and then picked up by both the Vikings and Titans during the 2010 season and this season is the same saga. Moss simply doesn’t look like the dominant wide receiver that he once was. Moss...

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets: Five Things We Learned

If you listen closely, the collective sigh of relief from the 49ers faithful fans screams like the winds off the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets: Hero and Zero of the Game

Not long after the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets clashed at the Meadowlands, it was explicitly clear which team prepared their team for victory and the other struggling to find answers. By the end, the sound of victory struck with profundity as the Niners hopped a flight headed west with a 34-0 victory in hand. After a tough loss to Minnesota, the 49ers embarked upon their...

49ers defense suffocates inept Jets

The San Francisco 49ers are everything Rex Ryan wishes his New York Jets were. San Francisco used a solid running game, a smothering defense, a little bit of the wildcat-style offense and even blocked a punt to cruise to a 34-0 victory Sunday. That's exactly the type of team the Jets coach was hoping to build. Instead, Ryan had to watch it from the other sideline as the 49ers...

Carlos Rogers says the Jets defense didn’t want to be on the field

According to Brian Costello of the New York post, during an interview with Sirius XM Radio, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers said that he got the feeling the Jets defense didn’t want to be on the field anymore during last week’s blow out. “It kinda seemed like, after a while they just, I know, looking at their defense, they didn’t want to be out there,” said...

49ers vs. Jets: Thumbs up and thumbs down

Which way does the thumb turn for the 49ers after their 34-0 victory Sunday over the New York Jets, including a bounce-back of defensive dominance, a regular wrinkle of Colin Kaepernick, a convoy for Carlos Rogers, David Akers hooking to the right, Dashon Goldson playing a mean center field, Frank Gore’s power plunge, emerging new weapon Mario Manningham and much more? Check inside.

49ers shutout Jets 34-0

The 49ers went into Met Life Stadium and embarrassed the Jets 34-0. The game started a little shaky, the offensive passing game was shaky, the running game was solid, but the 49ers just had trouble putting 7 on the board. In the 2nd quarter with 3rd and 7 the 49ers put the ball in the hands of Colin Kaepernick and he easily walked into the endzone for 7. After that the 49ers got...

49ers run over Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After the San Francisco 49ers' thorough 34-0 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, coach Jim Harbaugh said he walked into the visitor's locker room at MetLife Stadium and heard a bunch of players declaring, "That's more like it." 49ers offense needs to lift its game vs. Jets

Alex Smith knows his team will likely need an improved performance from its offense this week, and the 49ers will try to deliver that against an opponent missing a major part of its defense.
