Even though Alex Smith wanted to be released by the 49ers to see how much money he could make with his own negotiations with other teams, the 49ers declined that request. Now it seems that during the NFL Combine last week a deal possibly has been made with either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills.
Smith got injured last season from a concussion during a game against the St. Louis Rams and Colin Kaepernick took over and Smith was moved to the backup spot in the 49ers depth chart. According to CBSSports.com reporter Jason La Canfora, the trade for Alex Smith is “effectively complete”. Due to NFL rules, the 49ers can’t officially do anything until March 12th.
Ian Rapoport from NFL.com says that it is highly believed that San Francisco will be sending Smith to Kansas City. The Chiefs are not happy with the quarterbacks that they have on their current roster and interviewed several quarterbacks from NFL rookie class of 2013. Chiefs front office along with new head coach Andy Reid met with quarterbacks Mike Glennon of North Carolina State, Ryan Nassib of Syracuse, Geno Smith of West Virginia, Matt Barkley of USC, Tyler Wilson of Arkansas, Zac Dysert of Miami (Ohio) and Tyler Bray of Tennessee.
Andy Reid spoke on his impression of the quarterbacks by saying, “Collectively, I thought they did a good job. There wasn’t anybody where I said, ‘This guy is terrible.’ That’s not the way it was. What you’ve got to do is you’ve got to keep studying, spent more time with them. This is just kind of an introduction for now. We weren’t crossing guys off our list when it was over. You felt like they could all hang and do a good job and you wanted to know more. There wasn’t anybody where you said, ‘Forget about this guy.’ That wasn’t the case with any of these guys.”
Still with those remarks from Reid, it looks like Alex Smith would be a guy the Chiefs would love to have leading their team. Alex Smith and fans of the Chiefs will have to wait for a few weeks to see if this trade rumor becomes a reality.
