The San Francisco 49ers moved up six spots in the second round by giving two 2013 selections to the Packers, a 2nd rounder, (no. 61 - Eddie Lacy), and a 6th rounder (173rd overall) to select top tight end Vance McDonald out of Rice.
Vance McDonald is tall and rangy in the mold of the new breed of tight end flooding the NFL. He compares to Philadelphia Eagles Brent Celek. Consensus All C-USA selection at tight end and invitee to the Senior Bowl. Caught 36 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns, despite missing three games late in the season.
McDonald has an ideal frame and height. Ran a 4.69 at the combine and proved he was among the elite at his position athletically. He's an aggressive blocker that can play inline or flex out, and displays fluid movement. Excellent performance at the NFL Scouting Combine could push him into Day 2 consideration.
Needs to concentrate more on catching the football into his hands, and improve his footwork in short space. Needs to improve as a blocker at the NFL level and not regarded as having good hands. Straight-line speed is good, but change of direction skills are lacking.
