MINNEAPOLIS ? Vernon Davis never has been shy about talking about his own performances. But after his best game to date Sunday, the 49ers' tight end tried to turn the conversation to his team.
"I helped my team," Davis said. "It really didn't mean nothing to me because I want to win. I'm not a selfish person. If I'm the only one who did good, I'm not happy."
Many observers were surprised when, earlier this year, coach Mike Singletary named Davis one of his team captains for the season. Davis has been better known for practice-field fights and for getting kicked out of a 2008 game than for his leadership qualities.
But the added responsibility appears to be having a positive effect.
