TEAMS: Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO -- One season later, there was far less drama but the same result when the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions met in a rematch Sunday night at Candlestick Park. Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Vernon Davis, leading the 49ers to a 27-19 victory. When the 49ers faced Detroit last year in Week 6, they had to come from behind for a 25-19 win in a game that's remembered most for an altercation between 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Lions coach Jim Schwartz after the final gun. Harbaugh gave Schwartz a hard handshake and a slap on the back that day, and Schwartz took exception. This time, the two coaches met on the field before the game for a friendly handshake and a brief chat. There were no postgame fireworks when they shook hands again. "I thought it was good," Harbaugh said. "It's just about this matchup, two good teams. That's the story, two good teams going at it early in the season.&q...

49ers Alex Smith Gets Smacked On The Nose But Still Beat The Detroit Lions
If you saw Alex Smith in his post game interview you would have seen the blood flowing down the front of his nose, Smith didn’t let a sore nose stop him from finding a way to beat the Detroit Lions to move his 49ers to 2-0. Smith showed he is one tough competitor. Smith finished the game going 20 of 31 for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns. He found a way to get his team down the field...
A fan wandered into Alex Smith’s postgame interview last night
Alex Smith put on a show Sunday night in the 49ers 27-19 win over the Lions. Smith went 20-31 for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Because of his performance he was given the chance to speak with NBC’s Michelle Tafoya. Smith was joined by teammate Michael Crabtree, which isn’t so out of the ordinary. But what was out of the ordinary was that a man in a hoodie also decided that...
Alex Smith Holds a 49ers Record That Joe Montana and Steve Young Can't Touch
Name the 49ers quarterback who has thrown the most consecutive passes without an interception. Joe Montana? Wrong. Steve Young? Also wrong. The record-holder is none other than the current, much-maligned San Francisco quarterback. Alex Smith marked his 185th regular-season attempt without a pick Sunday, setting the new record. Young held the record for the 49ers going into Sunday...
2012 NFL Week 2: Super Creepy Guy Videobombs Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree In 49ers-Lions Game (Video)
The San Francisco 49ers are making a great case of why they should be considered as the best team in the NFL, as they knocked down the Detroit Lions in a 27-19 victory.Quarterback Alex Smith and wide receiver Michael Crabtree both did well in Sunday night's game, but they knew that they were videobombed hard by a super creepy guy during their interview on NBC Sports. As Deadspin...
Creepy hooded 49ers videobomber is creepy (and hooded)
How great is this guy? He videobombs Alex Smith and Michael Crabtree for a good 2-minutes without detection following the 49ers Sunday night victory over the Lions. The Hooded wonder leans in to listen to the 49ers quarterback, nods approvingly, shifts uncomfortably from side to side like a guy waiting for his buddy to steal a Playboy magazine from a corner store, and generally...
Alex Smith’s Success More Than a Mirage as He Continues Rise to Elite Level of Aaron Rodgers
Two inches, 23 selections and one man's vote of approval separated one of the most gifted quarterbacks prospects in recent memory and one of the greatest quarterbacks in what could be NFL history. Ahead of the 2005 NFL draft, Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers were stuck in a head-to-head competition to lock down the No. 1 overall pick. Neither had really set themselves far apart from...
49ers sitting at 2 and 0 after win over Lions
The Lions came into Candlestick and left with a L. The 49ers beat the Lions 27-19 and Alex Smith showed again that he is more than just a game manager.
Alex Smith finished the day 20-31 for 226 and 2 touchdowns and outplayed Matthew Stafford, who the 49ers made look like a backup. Stafford came into the game throwing over 350 yards for five consecutive games. Today he left with 230...
49ers, Alex Smith Dominate Lions, Matthew Stafford
Alex Smith, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has heard things said about him that would make a grandmother shudder. From the moment he was drafted out of Utah, people screamed that he was a system quarterback, and that his success was largely in part to Utah head coach Urban Meyer's spread offense. Even though some decried him as a traditional drop back quarterback...
49ers could be the new NFC favorite
Last week, the 49ers were able to hold off the Green Bay Packers, securing a win that could very possibly turn into a tie-breaker at the end of the season. With a win against the Lions at home, the 49ers could establish themselves as the team to beat in the NFC.
This game is intriguing for a number of different reasons. The Lions have a very explosive defense, but their...
49ers vs. Lions: Thumbs up and thumbs down
Which way does the thumb turn for the 49ers after their 27-19 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, including Alex Smith driving with blood dripping in crunch time, turning over a chance at NFL history, losing the battle of cheap shots, Vernon Davis’ post-TD jump shots, Dashon Goldson’s sticky mitts in center field, WRs Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham and much...
NFL Rumors: Unsettled Detroit Lions Will Bring In Ryan Grant And Steve Slaton For Backfield Workouts
The Detroit Lions are about as unsettled in their backfield as any other team in the NFL today. Kevin Smith has played fairly well, and Mikel Leshoure is expected back from suspension for the team’s next game Sunday against the struggling Tennessee Titans. With Joique Bell also in the mix, one would think that would be enough to piece together a satisfying enough running back committee...
49ers Move To 2-0 With 27-19 Win Against Lions
Alex Smith threw two touchdowns to Vernon Davis, Frank Gore ran for 89 yards and a score and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions 27-19 on Sunday night.
San Francisco's stout defense smothered Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson on a cold, late summer night at Candlestick Park until late in the fourth quarter. The Lions settled for field goals of 41, 40, 38 and 48...
Detroit Lions aim for miracle upset in San Fran
Not many experts are giving the Detroit Lions much of a chance to win in San Francisco this Sunday night, myself included.
After beating the Packers at Lambeau Field last week, the 49ers look like a Super Bowl contender. Meanwhile, the Lions barely squeaked past the lowly Rams at home.
San Francisco is the favorite by about a touchdown in this game, which I don’t think is enough...

SAN FRANCISCO (27) d DETROIT (19)
The Headline: Niners put the rest of the NFL on notice
The Story:
Whoever said this was now a total passing league did not count on the 49ers coming back and playing some good old fashioned smash mouth football and looking incredibly good doing it. While the final score will only reflect an eight point margin anyone who watched the game will know...
