After a nightmarish year of kicking with the now-departed David Akers, the 49ers have found their kicker.
It’s former Browns hired leg Phil Dawson.
Or so he says. The Niners haven’t confirmed the signing yet.
Dawson, unable to contain his excitement for going from a cellar dweller to a title contender, tweeted the news Tuesday afternoon. An exclamation point was used:
I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers!

Dawson, 38, was second in the NFL last season in field goal percentage at 93.5 percent (29 of 31) and was the AFC kicker in the Pro Bowl. It’s a definite upgrade at kicker for the Niners, who saw Akers finish second-to-last in the league in field goal percentage (69 percent) in 2012 after a record-setting season in 2011. In a move that surprised nobody, Akers was cut by the team earlier this month.

Kicking was an issue for the San Francisco 49ers last season; surprising considering that they had one of the best in the game, David Akers, on the roster. Every player--kickers including--eventually have a fall from grace. Maybe last season was it for Akers.
Anyway...rather than go with an untested rookie or nobody the team ended up tabbing another older veteran to take over...
