It was Alex Smith that helped the San Francisco 49ers into last year’s playoffs, but this time the stage belongs to Colin Kaepernick. After the San Francisco 49ers season ends, the questions regarding the status of Alex Smith will start to swirl. Many already have the 49ers trading Alex Smith to a number of teams, but after reviewing the situation it makes for sense for the 49ers to cut him as he then becomes a free agent. The 49ers tried to find an alternative, but after Jim Harbaugh pursued Peyton Manning they re-signed Alex Smith in March of 2012. The deal had no signing bonus, but a $3 million  roster bonus that was paid out when he signed the contract.… Read more

  • I understand this is a business but this is a ****** deal for Alex. No respect shown hope it comes back to bite the 49ers in the ass!
  • i agree
  • Jim Harbaugh needs to learn what goes around comes around. I hope Alex finds a home and comes back to have his day against the Niners!
  • Sadly, the analysis by this anonomous writer is correct. Alex Smith has been screwed by having seven offensive coordinators in eight years of play.

And sadder, he will have a new offensive coordinator in his next year. Look for him to sign in Kansas City.

Granted he has millions of dollars and a loving wife, but he was mismanaged by the 49ers.
  • He was screwed badly by Jim Harbaugh. I can only imagine if this had happened to Harbaugh when he was playing. Can you imagine how he would have acted if he had been put down in matter Alex was? I use to respect Harbaugh, but no more. What a rotten thing he did. Alex never did get a clear reason for being replaced. I do hope the Niners lose against Green Bay this weekend. Maybe the General Manager will decide to go with someone else next year and not even explain why he fired him. I hope Alex finds a team that will respect the person and player he is. I hope he gets to play against the Niners several times and defeats them every time.
  • I am also really unhappy with the 49ers moves with Alex! I can barely stand to watch a game anymore, Harbaugh's a Punk!
  • we gave the kucklehead over 70 million & he still can't beat the NY Giants.... SEE YA ALICE SMITH. Also he did not get screwed by Harbaugh, Colin is a lot better QB.
  • 9ers lost to the Giants because of Harbaugh's nimwitted play calling, not because of Alex. Harbaugh was never very good at anything, and now he's riding the coattails of a team that was steadily improving and was about to be a contender anyways. If you were at the last game where Alex got to play a few plays against the Cardinals, you would have heard how the fans REALLY feel about Alex. They were chanting his name. They know who got them where they are NOW. Certainly not Kapers. I can't wait to see the Packers stomp all over Kapers. Harbaugh should be the one fired. He only thinks of himself, NOT the team.
  • i agree that Alex got screwed big time!very hard to watch a game without him playing
  • Ok, so I live about 10 minutes from where "Snappercrack" as I like to call him grew up. He is a bit of a local hero. But as a Niners fan from the time I was a wee lad (before Joe even!) I have to say that this is one of the s--tiest things a coach could do to a player. I am of course rooting for my team this weekend, but I think that a good hard look needs to be taken at the internal workings of this organization during the offseason. Alex has done nothing but be patient and it paid off in the 2011 season as well as the beginning of 2012. This is a tantamount to a slap in the face. I wish him the best whatever happens, but I will ALWAYS root for the team I have always loved.
  • Boo friggin' hoo! Quit cryin' for poor ol' Alex Smith. Nice guy...yes. But Harbaugh is looking like a genius to me. Why? For now we have TWO top QBs going into playoffs so if one pulls an RGIII or Ponder dump the other can step in with no drop-off. Next year? Kaep will be $7 million LESS to keep next year vs Alex. Stats? Alex has a higher passer rating than Kaep but Kaep is no slouch at 98.7 and has better INT% than Alex. And Kaep has among highest yards per completion in NFL and is one Akers kick away from losing only one game. And stats aside, just let your eyes be the judge and tell me that Smith can even come close to making some of the completions Kaep does. Took Smith 6 years to roll to the right and actually complete a pass - he has never been good passing on the run. Tell me I am wrong about Alex but then ask yourself why only ONE team (Miami) gave him a look after last year and why 6 NFL teams preferred to start rookies QBs instead of going after Smith in free agency.

Two 49ers fined for throwing ball into stands

San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree and running back Frank Gore threw the ball into the stands after scoring touchdowns on Sunday, but giving fans a souvenir was an expensive move. The NFL has fined Crabtree and Gore $10,500 each for throwing the ball into the stands. Players are allowed to hand the ball to a fan in the first or second row if they can do so without...

San Francisco 49ers: Wild Card Round Power Rankings (#4)

It’s a shame Justin Smith had to get hurt. I was really interested to see just how much of a quarterback league this really is. We know it’s a quarterback league. Of the last 21 Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, 20 made a Pro-Bowl first. As meaningless as the Pro-Bowl is and as bad a job as the fans do in voting in the correct players, they generally do a good job picking the...

David Akers Death Threats: Sports Fans Truly Are Idiots

If you are reading this article, it is most likely because you are a sports fan. I am a huge sports fan, and have been one all my life. Like many, I get excited when my favorite team wins, as well as a bit upset when they lose. But never have I ever thought about lodging a death threat against any of the players who may have liked to my team losing. The latest death threats via Twitter...

'The Cowboy' saddles up for playoff comeback

The 49ers’ defense is that much more stingy with Justin Smith on the field. Anyone in his own locker room or elsewhere will emphatically say as much. So, perhaps the most important part of San Francisco securing a first-round playoff bye is the chance to get the defensive menace back for its playoff opener.

Let the kicking competition begin

Billy Cundiff, sporting a crisp new white No. 6 jersey, had an impressive first day of practice with the 49ers while kicking alongside struggling veteran David Akers as coach Jim Harbaugh closely watched. Cundiff signed a one-year contract with the NFC West champion Niners to compete with Akers as Harbaugh and his staff determine who will handle the kicking duties for the Niners in the playoffs.

Defense Takes Control Against Peterson

Using a patient and disciplined approach, Green Bay's defense found a yin for Adrian Peterson’s yardage-devouring yang. By winning Round 3 of the border battle, the Packers will get a rematch against Frank Gore and the 49ers next Saturday.
