San Francisco kicker David Akers will keep his job for the Super Bowl despite missing another field goal attempt in the NFC championship game on Sunday. "The decision's been made," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday. Akers missed a 38-yard try that bounced off the left upright in the third quarter against Atlanta that would have tied the score at 24. The 49ers pulled out the 28-24 win with a touchdown and a late-game defensive stand to advance to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens on Feb. 3. Akers has missed 14 of his last 38 field goal attempts, but he did kick a 36-yarder in the NFC divisional playoff win over Green Bay the previous week. Concerns about Akers' kicking before the playoffs prompted the 49ers to bring in free-agent Billy Cundiff for a tryout, but Akers held off the challenge. Last February, Akers underwent surgery for a sports hernia after a stellar 2011 season in which he kicked an NFL-record 44 field goals and set the league m...

49ers placekicker David Akers added a new chapter to his nightmarish season when his only field-goal attempt, a 38-yarder, clanged off the top of the left upright in the third quarter of San Francisco’s 28-24 win over Atlanta on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. 49ers sticking with David Akers at kicker

The most discussed 49ers position battle this postseason isn’t getting any less dramatic. No, I’m not talking about quarterback; that was settled weeks ago, if not last week. I’m talking about the grand ol’ kicker position. Jim Harbaugh announced on Monday that the team is sticking with the shaky David Akers as their placekicker for the Super Bowl: “The decision has been...

49ers will roll with David Akers into the Super Bowl

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has already made the decision that David Akers will be his kicker heading into Super Bowl XLVII. “The decision’s already been made,” Harbaugh said, per CSNBayArea.com. “David Akers is our kicker.” I think the best move is to go with Akers.  It’s hard to find a reliable kicker at this point.  They might as well go with guy...

Sad David Akers Has Some Company

David Akers beat out Billy Cundiff in the 49ers kicking contest, possibly because his competition was Billy Cundiff. But Akers’ woes continued today when he doinked a potentially game-tying field goal off an upright in the third quarter. He was so sad, he was joined by other sad memes. The post Sad David Akers Has Some Company appeared first on Kissing Suzy Kolber.

Jim Harbaugh Says David Akers Will Remain 49ers’ Starting Kicker for Super Bowl

It's the same reason that once the 49ers waived running back...

NFL Rumors: Will San Francisco 49ers bring back Billy Cundiff?

Heading into the playoffs, the San Francisco 49ers brought in free agent kicker Billy Cundiff to battle struggling placekicker David Akers.
