Yesterday it was the defense.  Today it is the offense.  As stated yesterday the Steelers are cap strapped.  They need to fill holes and still need to keep Mike Wallace.  I still feel if anyone offers Wallace big dollars he will not turn it down.  He wants the money.  He knows he can get it and he will take it.  So there will need to be a replacement on here for Wallace just in case.  It will not be Cotchery as he is already a target this is a projection.  Same as yesterday it will be 4 potential targets and one guy who we will not be able to get but I would love to have.

Free Agents:

  • Plaxico Burress, WR- This could be a replacement short term for Wallace.  Burress while not the dominant receiver he once was still commands a double team just due to his size alone.  He can take away defenders from Brown and Sanders giving them lanes to get open.  The Steelers would still need to get a receiver with some size and speed in the draft but Burress could fill the bill.  Burress likes to play with Roethlisberger and could come at around the same price as Wallace’s RFA tender.  It could be a one for one swap and we would have an extra first round pick.
  • Jake Scott, OG- Scott is an underrated guard out of Tennessee.  He will get lost in the shuffle during Free Agency.  The Steelers could use him to upgrade one of the guard spots on the offensive line.  He could replace Legursky and we could move forward.  Scott is more of a mauler than anything and will make holes in the run game.  He also is a solid pass blocker and would be a good upgrade for the Steelers.  It will depend on how long of a contract he wants.  He is 30 ad will be looking for his last good deal.
  • Michael Robinson, FB- Robinson went to his first Pro Bowl this year.  He blocked for Marshawn Lynch who had a huge year.  He is also a beast on Special Teams.  I clamor for Robinson every year.  One of these times it has to work.  If the Steelers are looking for a fullback who can still be elusive in the pass game this is the guy.  I would like to bring the former Penn State product back to PA to play for the Steelers.
  • Braylon Edwards, WR- Edwards was injured for much of last season and got lost in San Francisco.  You hear that Mike Wallace?  Lost in San Francisco.  If he comes back healthy next season he would still command a double team and like Burress would open up lanes for the receivers to break into.  Edwards does tend to have a case of the drops from time to time but his presence on the field will be what is most important for the Steelers.
  • Ben Grubbs, OG- Here is my out of range guy.  Grubbs would be just what we need at Guard.  He is a beast in the run game and an above average pass blocker.  I could have gone with Carl Nicks but Grubbs is a guy we see every year and he eats up our guys.  Stealing from Baltimore is always a plus.  If we were to get Grubbs the offensive line would go to a new level.  Gilbert, Grubbs and Pouncey would be a solid left side.  If we could get a good guard in the draft and if Colon played to potential we could be building a damn good line.  A guy can dream.
  • Honorable Mention Leonard Pope, TE-  Pope is a good blocker and seems to follow Haley and not for much money.  He could be a good number 2 tight end for the Steelers.  He would definitely help in the running game.

The Steelers are going to spend most of their time working on Wallace.  These guys could be long gone before we even know what happens with Wallace.  I would love to see us keep Wallace and bring in Grubbs.  If we lose Wallace and got Grubbs and Burress plus an extra first round pick I think would do the Steelers better though.  Wallace is great but he is a Wide Receiver.  He can be replaced.  Just like Burress and Holmes before him.  The Steelers scouting department seems to do a damn good job of finding WR’s as well.

Give me Burress, Grubbs, Franklin, and Fox plus an extra first round pick and I would be ecstatic.  That would fill all the holes and we could reduce our cap number at the same time.  I can not wait for Tuesday.
