Another offseason and once again defensive end Osi Umenyiora is in the news trying to get a new contract with the New York Giants. Umenyiora who is in the last year of his contract has been adamant that the Giants’ general manager Jerry Reese promised him a new contract if his performance stayed at a high level.
The Giants have refused to budge on a new contract though and Umenyiora has decided to play out the last year of his contract and become a free agent next year unless the Giants offer him a lucrative contract extension.

Umenyiora recently suggested that the Giants may trade him which many believe is likely to happen. The Giants are pretty deep on their defensive line and will be looking to lock up defensive linemen Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck to contract extensions soon. They will also look to sign wide receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks also.
Umenyiora on the other hand will be 31 in November so the team may not be looking to sign him to anything long-term. They may not be willing to wait and let him walk away next year either. Trading him now is the only way to assure they will get some compensation for him leaving.
So with that in mind here are the five teams that should seek a trade for Umenyiora:
5. St. Louis Rams
The Rams are looking to be a much stronger defensive unit under head coach Jeff Fisher and Umenyiora would make a nice bookend to match with defensive end Chris Long. Long had 13 sacks operating from the left side but could have used a little more help getting to the quarterback.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars were a top-ten team versus both the run and the pass last year but Jeremy Mincey was the only player who was able to consistently generate a pass-rush. Umenyiora would help make the Jaguars’ ball-hawking defenders more effective.
3. Tennessee Titans
The Titans had the second lowest sack total in the league last season. They will be looking to upgrade their pass rush through the draft but there doesn’t look to be any prospects in the draft that would make an immediate impact. With that being said, Umenyiora would be a major upgrade and give them time to develop any players they may acquire on draft day.
2. Carolina Panthers
Charles Johnson was their only competent pass-rusher last season so Umenyiora would be a great addition to this team. The Panthers were pitiful in nearly every aspect of their defense but getting to the quarterback is mandatory in a division where you have to face both Matt Ryan and Drew Brees twice a year.
1. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are in win-now mode and although they weren’t active in the Mario Williams sweepstakes they may be interested in bringing in Umenyiora to play alongside John Abraham. Umenyiora already resides in Atlanta having moved there before the start of last season and although the Falcons don’t have a lot of cap room, they probably wouldn’t mind cutting some of the dead weight on their roster if it would improve their defense.

New York Giants Mock Draft 2012: How a Possible Osi Umenyiora Trade Shakes Up the NYG Draft

Al Bello/Getty Images Now that they're done kissing the Lombardi trophy, all the New York Giants are left with is poor draft position. The knowledge that their first-round pick will be a second-round talent can at least be alleviated with shiny rings.  Despite their status as the NFL's defending champs, the Giants have plenty of holes to fill,...

Osi Umenyiora: Giants should trade me now

Defensive end Osi Umenyiora believes the New York Giants won’t be able to give him the contract he’s been looking for.   He thinks that if the Giants are going to let him walk in free agency after this coming season, they may as well trade him now and get something in return. “Would I want to (stay)? I think it would be ideal,” said Umenyiora per ESPNNewYork.com. “I think...

Robert Griffin III: Giants pass rush doesn't scare me

Robert Griffin III has been the talk of New York this week as he makes his way around town before Thursday night's 2012 NFL Draft, but the future quarterback of the Washington Redskins might have picked his own words a little better last night. The projected No. 2 pick says the prospect of facing the New York Giants ferocious pass rush of Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi...

Giants may trade Osi Umenyiora

This morning, Eric Edholm of ProFootballWeekly.com tweeted that both Browns quarterback Colt McCoy and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins could end up getting traded since we now know they’re both on the trade block. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger replied to his tweet and said that he should put Osi Umenyiora on that list because you “never know.” Now we don...

In Jerry We Trust

This title reflects the mentality of most fans of the defending Super Bowl Champion NY Giants. GM Jerry Reese has done a stellar job winning three NFC East titles along with two Super Bowl Championships.  He has drated exceptionally well, been wise with free agent signings, and, as mentioned, built two Super Bowl winners. That is why most Giants fans, myself included, believe Jerry...

Giants have the final pick in the opening round

Jerry Reese and the New York Giants are used to waiting in the first round of the NFL Draft. It's the price of success, and the Giants and their general manager are willing to deal with it, especially with two Super Bowl titles in hand over the past five seasons. The only difference this time might be when the Giants make their pick. The draft doesn't kick off until 8 p...

Osi trying to encourage teams to offer a deal to Giants

Even though the New York Giants are the Super Bowl Champions, that doesn’t mean that everything is all roses with them. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora is still as disgruntled as ever when it comes to his standing with the team. He isn’t barking at the team for his new contract, but has let it be [...]

New York Giants select David Wilson, Grace B-

I have to wonder if the New York Giants were prepared to take Doug Martin and panicked when the Bucs moved up and landed him with the 31st pick. David Wilson is a decent prospect, who I gave a 2nd-round grade, but I’m not excited about how he fits in New York. As long as he holds on to the football he’ll be a quality running back, but just doesn’t project as a difference maker...

Pre-Draft Chat with New York Giants' All-Pro DE Jason-Pierre-Paul

As the American sporting world turns its attention tonight to the Big Apple for the NFL’s annual DRAFT, there were no shortage of parties, events and brands saddling up with existing league standouts to woo the ascended media. When it comes to standing out, few made as big a splash this past season as the Super Bowl champion  Jason Pierre-Paul.  The freakishly athletic JPP from...

NY Giants Draft RB David Wilson from Virginia Tech

TweetThe New York Giants draft RB David Wilson in the first round with the 32nd overall pick. Wilson, an athletic, fast running back out of Virginia Tech was highly regarded by Jerry Reese and the organization. The only RB New York had ahead of Wilson was Trent Richardson out of Alabama. Some fans found the pick surprising and were not very happy about it but who are we to argue...

Five NFL players who could be traded during the 2012 NFL Draft

Within a few mere hours, the 2012 NFL Draft will open for business. Every year, the NFL Draft brings unique and unexpected storylines as teams make moves which seemingly come out of left field. 2012 will be no different and as the dust settles after the seventh round on Saturday night, there will be some head scratching moments. Among the possible moves tonight, five players could...
