There are some years when getting down to 53 players is easy and others where it can be as difficult as ever. After five preseason games, there are about five spots that remain up in the air with the Bengals.
They have to pare 22 players of their roster by 6 p.m. Saturday. The biggest question mark remains what will they do with the sixth receiver spot? Jerome Simpson has had a solid offseason in the classroom and on the field but sixth-round pick Dezmon Briscoe has shown flashes of potential to find a way to keep him on the roster.
Said receivers coach Mike Sheppard of the competition between the two: “Jerome had a couple chances to make good catches and did as did Dez. That’s what that competition is all about. I think you consider the whole body of work, the upside and our future and make the best decision you can.”
If Briscoe is released, the odds of him clearing the waiver wire so that the Bengals can sign him to the practice squad are extremely slim, especially after his 50-y...
