Andy's CODE

In the last nine years this team -- the Andy Reid Eagles. Has been the most successful in Franchise history. In the last nine years this team has won their division five out of the last six years. They have never been One-and-done in the playoffs. They have always been competitive in the playoffs. In 2004 they even made it to the Super Bowl where the faced off against the New England Patriots.

While since 2004 the Patriots became this team that seems to be unstoppable. The Eagles became a team scrambling to find an identity. Now I have said this from the beginning, some Eagle fans think when I do this I am bashing our coach, I am not. I just think that if McNabb was supplied with a true number one Wide receiver and an effective running game he would become the MVP that we as Eagle fans know he could be. I do not think that he would be as injured as he has been in the past. I think when Westbrook is given chance to run as many times as a true star running back is given in the NFL. I think when Donovan is supplied with those two options he is a more safer and much more successful Player. I will go as far as to say if Donovan was supplied with those two options in the past he would have brought the Vince Lombardi trophy to our city more than one time.

Our Coach fails to admit where he comes up short. Now Andy Reid is a very successful Coach and I will never start taking away from how good he is. What is different between Andy Reid and Bill Belichick is that Belichick is able to change his Philosophy when it has failed. Case in point -- The Patriots lost to the Colts last year and the blame really landed on some poor defensive play and the Wide receivers that Brady was supplied with. So what did Bill Belichick do? He went out and got the three top receiving threats that were out there to get. As well as the top defensive threat. Now keep in mind Andy Reid had just as a chance to end up with Randy Moss as the Patriots did.

The thing is that if Andy went out and got Moss he would be admitting he was wrong. And the man cannot do that, he is just too proud. Now while we were normally the beasts of the NFC east, we are all witnessing all the other teams in our division becoming top teams in the NFC. So we are left at the bottom looking up.

Now I am not throwing in the towel for this season. I still believe the Eagles can end up in the Playoffs. They are after all only one game out of the last wildcard spot. And while defeating the Patriots may be a long shot in many fans minds. I think they have the tools to do it. If they play a strong defense and make a few turnovers happen. Then hand it off to Westbrook all day successfully. I think they could win this game. But running it all day goes against Andy's Code. We as Eagle fans have come to know Andy's Code as passing at least 75 percent of the time. Maybe with A.J. Feeley is playing they may rely on B-West more. But with Andy and his Code who knows? And his Code is what has been causing our team to fall short in the past.

Now looking past this season -- If they stick with Donovan (And God knows I hope that they do.) I think they have a great chance to build to a Super Bowl caliber team. They need to take a page from the Patriots book this season. Go out and by any means necessary get a true number one receiver. They don't have to sign two other wide receivers like the Patriots did. They already have three young really reliable receivers (Kevin Curtis, Reggie Brown and Jason Avant.) So all they would need to do is get that number one receiver and perhaps a Tight end. It all depends on how Brent Celek develops. Then you need to go all out on defense. Get some pass rushers, along with some safety help. I think the young Linebackers will improve with one more season under their belts.

But even if they do all of this there is still room for failure due to Andy's Code. If Andy can find a way to some how stick to the Ground game with Westbrook, Buckhalter and give Tony Hunt a chance and not overuse his new toy in the receiving core, I think this team can be just as devastating as the Patriots are this season.

i hear you..if #5 was given a fair chance all would be right in philly..now i am worried about westbrook!!i agree with you put bucky and hunt in and start beating up the defenses..you cannot put a team sport on any one players shoulders they just aren;t big enough..

You got it, Brian Westbrook is just about one of, if not the best running back in the NFL right now. But even he needs breaks. Westbrook, Buckhalter and Hunt would make just about as good as a three headed monster as there is in the NFL right now. With the majority of carries going to B-West of course. Now Andy's code is not only hurting McNabb and this Eagles franchise legacy. He is also hurting B-West's. I think you'll agree that if Westbrook was given the ball more from his earlier years as an Eagle he would be talked about with the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson. But since Andy refuses to run the ball he continues to hurt Westbrook via carries and McNabb via injury.

It's funny how you wrote this before the game and then the result being just that, the code asks too much of the quarterback. And as we all saw in 2004 or even last night with Moss getting shut down opening up the underneath stuff, if you have the weapons to execute then you have a good shot but even with all that deep threat talent, throwing too much can put your defense in tough positions and Brady didn't even throw an INT. I'm so tired of the media trying to blame Mcnabb when it is so obvious to me he has been a victim of the system. A.J. couldn't get it done without balance and neither could Garcia.

amen and thaks for sticking up for mcnabb but we tend to forget we had a number one wide receiver in b.o. he just keep his mouth off of mcnabb just like the rest of the so called fans.but i really dont think he will be back next year and if he isnt woe is me we are in trouble.i cant blame mcnabb if he dosent want to come back next year personally i wouldnt stay where i not wanted by teamates or fans.face it his teamates do not look at him the same and therefore they dont as hard for him as they do others because of the whole b.o. fiasco enough said

I never forgot about "B.O.", how could you? We only had our most successful year when he was here. Which makes you wonder why Andy and those heads with the Eagles didn't realize that we need a true number one Wide receiver to be most effective. And as far as Donovan staying here, there's no one who wants five here more than myself. But this team tends to do better when he is out. You saw sunday night when they almost defeated the Pats and last year when Garcia took over. Of course donovan has made it effective in his own way, but I dont know why it just seems to me that the O-line, receivers and run game tend to do better when five is out. It pains me to say this but I don't see Donovan in Eagles green after this season.

this was a really good article. well written.

andy has mosdef been the most successful coach in eagles history....and mcnabb the most successful qb in eagles history.

but chuck noll and tom landry are perfect examples that sometimes it is time to turn the page.

we should thank andy for his exceptional run....and probably thank #5 for his exceptional run.....and thank them both for the class with which they did their jobs.......and turn the page to a new regime.

i disagree with your assertion that this team could be as devastating as the patriots. they simply have not drafted well enough and used free agency wisely enough to keep up with the patriots.

so....it is also time to turn the page on the current front office.

the eagles job is a plum job......the owners defer to the football guys, provide excellent facilities and all the money necessary to be successful. it would be a top notch vacancy...and should attract top notch candidates.

thanks for your post....again, it was excellent.

Great points! As far as their drafting goes I kind of disagree. I don't believe that they do not draft well. I believe their draft picks are good enough, its just the way that they handle the draft picks in the first season which hinders the rookies from learning. They never see any field time and they rarely ever work with the starting squad until their second season. Let's face it this Andy Reid offense is complicated enough. The best way would be for these rooks to get a crack at it on the field.

Thanks, great information!!! E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles!!!
