The re-signing of Cedric Benson took the running back position from a top need to second tier need in the upcoming NFL Draft. Benson showed a spark after joining the team at mid-season. He has a nice blend of power and burst which makes you feel like he could be an every down back. Speptics point out to 3.5 yards per carry and how the bulk of his yardage came against sub-par defenses while gaining just 52 yards on 26 carries vs. Pittsburgh and Baltimore. With the depth chart showing the names of Kenny Watson (a solid 3rd down back), Chris Perry (1st round bust), DeDe Dorsey (can't stay healthy), James Johnson (who?) and recently acquired Gary Russell (goal line back/returner?). With the above list hardly instilling confidence the Bengals will be looking to add a 2nd option to its ground attack in the draft. How early they select a back will speak volumes about confident they are in Benson. With some rumors having the Bengals showing heavy interest in Beanie Wells and Knowshon Moreno, you have to believe the team is either looking to reach for a running back at #6 or consider trading down in round one. Don't forget the team has a long tradition of drafting 2nd round running backs including Eric Ball, Harold Green, Corey Dillon and Kenny Irons. In addition, to running back the team will also be looking to draft a fullback as they do not have a quality fullback option on the roster. Do not expect the fullback to be selected earlier than round 5. Running Back: Round 1 Targets: Beanie Wells, Knowshon Moreno Round 2 Targets: Donald Brown, LeSean McCoy Mid-Round Targets (rounds 3-4): Shonn Greene, Andre Brown, Javon Ringer, Cedric Peerman, Rashad Jennings, Kory Sheets Late Round Sleepers (rounds 5-7): Gartrell Johnson, Mike Goodson, Ian Johnson, Glen Coffee, Marlon Lucky Fullback: Mid-Round Targets (rounds 3-4): Tony Fiametta Late Round Sleepers (rounds 5-7): Quinn Johnson, Frank Summers, Fui Vakapuna, Jason Cook

Bengals Draft Preview: Quarterbacks

Carson Palmer is expected back after missing most of 2008 with an elbow injury. The team proved last year it was not built to handle an injury to its franchise quarterback (most team's aren't) and 2009 will be no different. The Bengals elected to go for a cheap backup quarterback with some experience settling on former Lions and 49ers JT O'Sullivan. The third stringer...

With the Sixth Pick in the Fansided Collaborative Mock Draft…

…the Cincinnati Bengals select Alabama OT Andre Smith. The Bengals entertained a trade offer from a team with a mid-round pick which offered that selection plus a starting right tackle, but that player will be a free agent in 2010 and Cincinnati had no guarantee it would be able to sign him prior to next March. [...]

Bengals Mock Draft Big Board 4/18

With one week to go until the 2009 NFL draft, Alabama OT Andre Smith remains the favorite for the Cincinnati Bengals’ selection at No. 6. OT Eugene Monroe runs a strong second, and in fact many of Andre’s backers pick him only because Monroe and fellow top OT Jason Smith are off the board. DT B.J. Raji [...]

Bengals Still Interested in Raji?

With the signing of DT Tank Johnson a few days back, conventional wisdom has been that the Cincinnati Bengals are out of the running for DT B.J. Raji. However, in his latest mock, SI’s Don Banks writes that some sources say Marvin Lewis will jump all over Raji if he’s still there. But Banks believes that [...]

Bengals claim Gary Russell

It didn't take long for ex-Steelers RB Gary Russell to find a new home. Pittsburgh released Russell on Thursday; the Cincinnati Bengals claimed him on waivers on Friday. Well, if nothing else, at least one player on the Bengals' roster will have a Super Bowl ring.

Bears release Bazuin, Okwo, four others as roster deadline looms

There are quite a few people out there who have questioned the early-round drafting ability of Bears general manager Jerry Angelo. And for good reason. Notable misses under his regime include running back Cedric Benson (1st round in '05), defensive end Michael Haynes (1st round in '03), and cornerback Roosevelt Williams (3rd round in '02). Today, the team added fuel...
