Bucs' Clayton Has Been A Stranger To The End Zone

In his last 18 games, Tampa Bay wide receiver Michael Clayton has as many touchdowns as I do. In fact, the last game Clayton scored in was the final game from his rookie season in 2004. Why hasn't been able to replicate the numbers he put up as a rookie? First, he was hampered by various injuries throughout most of last season, which really never let him get on track and in step with quarterback Chris Simms. Second, it appears that the majority of the blame can be placed on Tampa Bay's offense stalling and sputtering for stretches of games. According to his coaches and teammates, Clayton's dip in productivity is certainly not a product of his work ethic, as both Jon Gruden and Joey Galloway praise Clayton's workout regiment.

As far as fantasy is concerned, I would hold on to Clayton for now in hopes that maybe he gels with new QB Bruce Gradkowski and turns things around. Chances are that there isn't much left on the waiver wire right now anyway. If things don't pick up in the next couple weeks or so, and there are better options on your waiver wire, then you may want to go ahead and cut your losses heading into the playoffs.

Does anyone still have him on their fantasy rosters? If you do you haven't been paying attention to football this year. Clayton should have been dropped weeks ago and replaced with guys like Mike Furrey, Jericho Cotchery, Marques Colston and, Reggie Williams.

Clayton's numbers from Sunday: 6 catches, 55 yards, TD.

Furrey: 3 catches, 39 yards
Cotchery: 1 catch, 6 yards
Colston: 4 catches, 40 yards, TD

So like I said, hold on to Clayton for now in hopes that he and Gradkowski develop some chemistry as a tandem. Those of you in leagues with 12, 14 or even 16+ teams probably drafted Clayton as a WR2 thinking that Chris Simms's play from the end of last year would carry over and lead to Clayton having numbers similar to his rookie campaign. And while guys like Colston, Cotchery and Colston were scooped off the waiver wire in the first or second week, the thinking was that it was too early in the season to cut ties with Clayton. Give him two weeks and see where he stands.

No doubt after the performance this week (6) that Michael Clayton should be considered for a roster spot on any fantasy team, very nice job in predicting that. But here were his and the others per game average prior to week six:

Furrey: rec 5, yards 56.6, TD .4
Cotchery: rec 4.4, yards 29.3, TD .6
Colston: rec 4.6, yards 34.8, TD .7
Williams: rec 4.8, yards 59.4, TD .8
Clayton: 2.5 yards 29.3, TD .2

Those are Clayton's numbers after four games this season, the other's have had five games. If you look at last year's numbers (32 rec, 372 yards and 0 TDs) and the numbers so far this year he deserved to be dropped for these other WRs. You say it yourself give him two weeks, well he had a season and a quarter where he didn't produce and he was getting a young and unproven QB, that is normally a recipe for disaster.

For the record I drafted Clayton in my league but I dropped him in week two for Colston. I am happy with my decision but I do still like Clayton and I, like many others will keep an eye on him but one good week out of his last 18 does not reserve him a spot on my fantasy roster and he shouldn't be anybody else's right at this moment. Who knows maybe after next week I will sayingthat he is a must start and that you are a genius but as of now Clayton is waiver wire material.

I agree with you for the most part. My main point was maybe mostly directed at deeper leagues, and perhaps I was unclear when I wrote that. In my 16 team league, the best WRs available are Nate Washington, Patrick Crayton, and Dnate Hall who are at best bye week pickup spot starters who you have to pray to have a productive game. Clayton is obviously a better bet to produce than them. I'm not completely sold on Clayton after this week either. I'm also in a ten team league and I dropped him two weeks ago. It depends on your format. I've also been reading a handful of articles that states he's an overly emotional player and that a performance like Sunday's, as average as it was, may be the kick in the ass he needs.

I hopeyou are right Harvey_Bars, Clayton is too good to be playing this poorly. Good luck to you in the rest of the season.
