I'm not doubting that Larry is a classy guy, an incredible football player, but what has he proven on the football field. I'm sorry but if I compare the early part of Randy's career to Larry's career...Randy is hands down the better receiver. Larry is worth a ton, but not his current contract value and his agent is already looking at 2 yrs from now. The Cardinals are stuck with the contract that they offered, but do we have to be held hostage by there mistake. It's not as easy as opening a checkbook and writing the big check. What are we willing to give up for him. Contracts escalate and next year someone will be on the block just to keep him around. Look at what is happening to the Cards right now. They lost there big young defensive free agents because of Larry's contract...do you really want that? Are you aware of how many of our young kids are up for new contracts in 2010? Call me a long range thinker, but I'm not willing to give up the franchise for one player.

I agree on the front that it will cost us some young players in the next few years, and maybe drafting a big reciever would be better than a trade. Plus keeping lito and asnate would be a nasty CB combo ... but on the other hand who did moss compete with in minny? Fitz has a disfunctional QB situation, another 100 catch reciever in Boldin, before last seasons the O-line couldnt protect anyone, and with Edge the recievers arent getting as many looks.

If i knew if we traded for Fitz and it would end in a super bowl victory, but we wouldnt have a few young players i'd say do it, but either way this team is going to be a whole lot better than last season

I understand your concern for the future, but a lot can and will happen before then. Do you realize how many of our CORE players are signed through 2012,2013,2014,2015? Our FO is smart, they sign young players to lengthy contracts before their value goes through the roof and this WILL continue. By 2010 we will have many expired contracts, some of which are quite hefty. Tra Thomas, Jon Runyan, Dawk, TKO to name a few. Young guys will take their place, cap space will be freed and we'll be demanding we sign that offseasons best available free agent. Its a never ending cycle.
    • dtrik19 ya u hit the proverbial nail on the head fo sure.....it is a never ending cycle, we'll just have to wait & see

First, I was tired of all the WE HAVE TO HAVE FITZ articles and just wanted to shake it up some. I'd love him here and I think we would win a super bowl, period the end. I'm ready for the big game again and this team bring a trophy home. I'm just not as fixated on this guy as everyone else. Not for a two year stint in Philly. Now Roy on the other hand, we could offer a contract long term that he probably wouldn't refuse. My point there are other options to fill the void...Here's the kicker, If AZ didn't do it back then, why would they do it now when all of there big free agents are signed. I guess that's why they pay the FO them the big bucks.
    • know what, youngblood, we need youngblood to shake sum stuff up.....long term is right K5A - interesting read & points made gentlemen
  • The eagles are possibly the best team at structuring contracts, they would make it so fitz's cap number isnt that high and wouldnt restrict our freedom to make other deals. Plus you are forgetting that Fitz is young, and may be the most promising receiver in the NFL. Donovan, Westbrook, Fitz, Curtis, and Brown for a couple years, then Kolb replacing McNabb when he retires, sounds like a pretty damn good offense for the future, no matter what moves they do or dont make. Not to mention Cole, Samuels, Brown to makeup the core of the defense for a good many years, what other moves would they need?
BOTTOM LINE: Throw whatever it takes Arizona's way to get Fitz. If he has 1400 yds in a BALANCED offense with a mediocre at best QB throwing to him, just think of what he would do w/ a top 5 Pro Bowl QB and a Pass oriented offense... can you say superbowl? Forget Lito, forget our draft picks... what have we gotten w/ them the last few yrs anyway? Pretty much nothing but disappointment. Freddie Mitchell ring a bell? Having the Eagles attempt to draft a wide receiver wouldnt work out too well. Depth at CB isnt something that is necessary for success, a legit #1 wide out is. Giants w/ Burress, Colts w/ Wayne and Harrison, u dnt win a superbowl w/o a #1 WR. The only acception being the Pats, who had a great all around WR core, and a defense which has been unrivaled in the past decade, not to mention an extremely accurate QB (something Donovan is not).

I agree with all of you...This is stuff that hasn't come out in other conversations...good stuff. I think he would tear the NFC East's Defensive backfields a new one. My point counterpoint is take a look at our 2010 roster, a close look at that roster, and the key people and overlapping positions. People keep saying that this organization will just restructure his contract...I've said this before if he won't do it for AZ why then for Philly.

Hey at the end of the day anything to make Jerry Jones and company look like last years loss to the Giants, I'm game for I won't be unhappy with him here thats for sure

the cardinals getting rid of fitz would be like us getting rid of westbrook, they know they cant let go of their best player, i mean they're not even a playoff-caliber team WITH HIM, so imagine what they'd be like without him...they'd suck worse than tony homo and his boyfriends after a long night of drinking and being a fag

  • I was in no way trying to say that it would be easy to get fitz, merely saying that the author of this article is wrong about what we should give up to try to get him. Fitz is young, and the best WR prospect out there in my opinion. Thus if there is any way we can get him by giving up lito, draft picks, and any other player not imperative (aka any backup) to the offense or defense, we NEED to do it.Signing fitz to a long term deal is much better than any 1st rnd draft pick could ever be... what 1st rnder do you know of who is guaranteed for 1000+ yds a season? Hell, he is better than Lito, a 1st rnder and 2 2nd rnders will turn out to be. Most of our 1st 2nd and 3rd rnd picks from this yr wont be around in 4 years anyway, so they would really have no impact on our future, you arent really giving away all that much by trading away your mid 1st rnd pick and a couple 2nds and 3rds.

And also, to Keep5Alive, in your comparison of Moss and Fitz, you have forgotten the fact that Moss consistantly had a better QB (Culpepper?) throwing to him then Fitz(Warner and Leinart). Also, the Vikings had an extremely good running game which made double teaming Moss less frequent (Robert Smith, 1000+ yds every season). The Vikings offense was also much more pass oriented, and often they broke out in 4 and 5 wide receivers sets, making double teams next to impossible, whereas the cardinals use more of the basic 2-3 wide receiver sets. U are also ignoring the fact that Randy Moss was the only premier WR in Minnesota and thus got most of the balls thrown his way(only other person was Chris Carter, who was in the later stages of his career), fitz had to share the ball w/ Boldin, one season they both put up 1400 yds, imagine what fitz's yardage wouldve been like if boldin wasnt there. One last point, if u notice is that the Vikings threw a lot more deep routes than the Cardinals, as Moss has more yards per catch, and overall yards, but less catches. If fitz comes to philly, donovan loves to throw the deep ball, and those yards and ypc would greatly increase, and if his # of catches stayed at 100, ud be looking at a 1600-1700 yd season... and a superbowl.

Even if getting Fitz would cost us in the future (although I'm relatively certain it would have no impact other than as positive one as I've already said), I would gladly trade one Super Bowl victory, and one 2-3 year period of being one of the best teams in football for 10 years of mediocrity following it. We have been planning for the future for over 40 years now, 42+ yrs without a superbowl, 42 YEARS we have been knocking at the door, but have been too worried about the future and have never gotten over the hurdle. 42 YEARS!!!!! That is long enough, one victory parade down broad street would last most philly fans a lifetime, just 1 championship. Forget the future, throw caution to the wind, go balls out for McNabbs final few seasons as an Eagle and go for that championship. Cause once McNabb is gone as QB, the eagles shot at a superbowl will be gone for at least 3-4 years, and wingbowl will be the only bowl we pay attention to in Feb. TRADE FOR FITZ NOW!!!

I knew the comparison of early Randy to Fitz would get people, but I see those early days as this, Carter was at his best with Randy there and vice versa. When Carter was down, so was Randy...the guy needs a complement as well. I think it comes down to who had the better Oline and by far the Vikes had that over the Cards. That's what's killing Leinhart. Again, I agree with every thing you stated, I'm just trying to make you think and tell me something I didn't know past Fitz rules we must sign him.

sandlansd has it right, our shot is NOW! We need a Fitz type receiver. FO if you have tor trade
brown, lewis and lito do it!!!
  • Is anyone else curious why this 'Renegotiating of Larry's contract' is taking so long? And why Bryant Johnson has not signed elsewhere. The Cards may be willing to resign Johnson if they trade Fitz. It just seems like somehting is going on that meida does not know about and I hope that it is the birds getting the balls to cough up some cash or players for this Fitz.

This ridiculous rumor was created by the incompetent GCobb. Why should anyone believe this bogus rumor?

GCobb is trying to create some traffic for his new and awful web site. He's not a journalist. He has absolutely zero credibility.

The Eagles will not trade for Fitzgerald. He's scheduled to make $14.5925 million this year and $17.355 million next season. The Eagles are paying Samuel a little over $9 Million this season. The Eagles have to sign their draft picks, which will also take away some cash from their salary cap number.

Westbrook ($5.7 million) is underpaid, as are Andrews ($2.8 million) and Trent Cole ($3.1 million). The Eagles will likely give at least two of these players a new contract before the 2009 season.

Remember that the Eagles have always kept roughly $5 -$8 million in salary cap space available every year in case they want to restructure the contracts of players who they want to sign to a long term deal (LJ Smith, Omar Gaither) or restrucure the contracts of those players who are underpaid, like Westbrook..

Does anyone really think that the Eagles will pay Fitzgerald more money than McNabb ($9.6 million) or Westbrook? Don't you think that would create some animosity among the Eagles best players who would make less money than Fitzgerald?

If you want reliable information, try profootballtalk.com. Try any sports information website other than the weak website created by a guy who just wants some publicity.

Have you noticed that the people creating these articles all signed up to YardBarker in the last few days? Have you noticed that these people keep creating new articles about the same topic? How many new articles about Fitzgerald have been posted in the last week? Seven or eight?

"But the way we hear it, if there isn't any substantial progress toward a new deal in the next week or so, the Cardinals might have no choice but to consider trading Fitzgerald"

"But there's no way the Cardinals will go for that deal," one team insider told PFW. "I would think they would demand a considerable haul in draft choices (rather than) just Lito Sheppard and a No. 2. If Fitzgerald is going anywhere, the Cardinals will ask for the moon."

The two quotes above hardly sound like a guarantee that the Eagles will trade for Fitzgerald. The "Cardinals might have no choice" and "If Fitzgerald is going anywhere, the Cardinals will ask for the moon" indicate that this trade will never happen.

Why would the Eagles pay so much money to a player who isn't as good as Westbrook, who will make $5.7 million this season?

kevin1 has made numerous outlandish comments regarding Fitzgerald. He wants the Eagles to make this deal. Unfortunatley, it's just a dream of his. I wouldn't be surprised if kevin1 is a friend of GCobb, or a big GCobb fan. This is just another fake rumor, created by someone who can't think objectively.

Last week, the Eagles reportedly were going to trade for Torry Holt. How did that work out?

The Eagles won't get Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, or Chad Johnson. Just accept reality

the cardinals getting a long term contract, that takes up less cap room, is better for them if they want to trade him. His value really goes up and makes it easier for a team to pay a high price. I.e. The eagles will be more willing to get the trade. Them getting fitz before the cards get a contract done, it definately benefit the eagles. I'm not saying this trade is going to happen, but I hope it does
