Remember the days of Marcus Allen? How about the one day of Joe Montana? Not even the years of Tony Gonzalez? Fact is, few people do. The Kansas City Chiefs have not been competing for anything this year except for the bottom spot on every power ranking list. So is there anything to look forward to for the warriors in red? Well, not really, but it's always fun to make up a bright side anyways.
The Chiefs have potential at quarterback. Matt Cassel led last year's Patriots to an 11-5 record while impressing and all together surprising the NFL. If you were to consider Cassel a second year quarter back, he really is not doing all that bad. He has thrown for 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions with a QB rating of 73.2. While these definitely are not Pro Bowl numbers, they also are not team killing numbers either. The receiving core could also be good in theory. Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers have both had some really good years. However, they have been slacking as of late so it is yet to be seen if they are going to go on an upswing again. The last ray of sunshine to find is the Chiefs running game. Larry Johnson? Not a chance. Jamaal Charles has big play ability. A former Longhorns star, Charles has not necessarily broken out yet, but he has all the tool needed to be a feature back.
The point is, beyond the Broncos surprising 6-1 start, the AFC West is arguably one of the NFL's worst divisions. All it would take is one hot streak one of these years, and the Chiefs could throw their name in the hat for king of the west. If potential was worth it's weight in gold, that time could be coming faster than most think. However, this franchise is on a frantic down spiral and it might take the miracle of a few years in order to pull them out of it.
