MVN:
So I am sitting at home watching rugby, Aussie Rules Football and the NFL Network's replay anxiously awaiting the pre-season. I tend to prefer to bring out the good rather than dwell on the bad, so I get to thinking about our team and what our strengths are rather than our weaknesses.
We have a four headed monster of a running game. As mentioned last week, all four of our backs are bruising and can flat out make people miss or just plain drag them for yards.
We have a ball hawking, hungry defense that is loaded with play makers. Rhodes, Leonhard, Scott, Harris, Ellis, Jenkins, Sheppard and Revis. Every area of the defense has at least two superior talents in that level with more than adequate veterans serving as subs and backups.
We have an underrated emerging star at Wideout. Yes, I said it. J-Co deserves his props and he has shown me an ability to make catches and crucial plays when needed. I think that this year will see an emergence from Chanci Stuckey and David Clowney which will take some of the pressure off of Cotchery.
Dustin Keller. The guy is a beast. He can't be covered by anyone in the league one on one. There is nobody big enough that can keep up with him. Those that can keep up are like little children trying to play against a grown man.
We have a fourth year, X factor QB with a cannon arm who has studied under Chad and Brett or a rookie that's Chad Pennington 2.5. Same smarts as Chad, less experience and a stronger arm, though not as strong as Clemens' arm is.
This all got me to thinking. What is the one thing we need that can put us over the top this year, seeing as how many feel that that QB situation is a major issue or concern. As I said, I tend to look up rather than down, but I am realistic enough to know that Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez are not putting fear into any defenses. That's when it hit me like Christian Okoye running into Derrick Thomas.
When you look back at teams that may have been lacking in one area (sometimes more) yet had success in the NFL, they all had one thing in common. Trick plays/formations. This creates mismatches instantly and also can totally catch a defense off guard and shift momentum in a game. Every great Parcells team did it, just look at who won the AFC East last year. They installed a "wildcat" offense and took the entire league by surprise.
We have a wideout that was a college QB in Brad Smith. We have running backs that can blow by any corner in the league in Leon Washington and Danny Woodhead. We have talent at every level of the offense as well as the defense. I fully expect teams to stack the box often against us, so why not use that to our advantage. A little bit of play action, TE or RB flanked out, flea flickers, end arounds, HB direct snaps and such will definitely give us that extra advantage that we will need. Imagine a formation of Cotchery and Keller outside and Leon in the backfield and TJ or Stuckey in the slot. You can create multiple mismatches on one play.
Knowing Rex Ryan's influence on the team, I can see this coming to fruition and actually working quite well. There were reports out of OTA's that they went with the Wildcat format frequently. Brad Smith and Leon Washington both took snaps out of the gun at quarterback and we saw Clemens moving out wide on multiple occasions.
On the other side of the ball, the Jets continue to showcase anything and everything. On one particular blitz, Bart Scott backed up from his traditional linebacker position and played deep safety as everyone else attacked the line. Now, I am not saying that we need to try to go with a completely college style offense, but if we are starting a college QB...

New York Jets: Fantasy Preview
QB – Will Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens be named the starter in 2009? Only Time will tell, but I think the Jets didn’t move up in the draft not to play Sanchez right away. He has some raw skills to be a QB in the NFL, but will need to hone them over his career. The fact that the receiving core is not that strong in New York also does not help...

Forget about the first pick and Lions starter Matthew Stafford for a minute. Pressure on him?
His new team went 0-16 last season! A one-win season can be seen as an improvement.
On the other hand, after a disappointing finish last year and the departure of Brett Favre, the New York Jets traded up to the fifth pick for Mark Sanchez in this year's draft.

Is Leon Considering a Holdout?
After an interview with Leon Washington last night, Rich Cimini of the Daily News was unclear on what the season held for Leon Washington. It seems that Leon is mulling holding out, but he’s just not sure how to proceed at this point.
